I found the backstory overview that was on the website around the time Killzone 2 came out pretty neat. I wasn't even surprised when it turned out that the Helghast dindu nuffin. It's like the British attacking american colonies, but with even less justification than IRL.

All I remember is that in the first game on PS2, the bullets moved extremely slowly, so in online you had to lead your targets like you were shooting a nerf gun at them.

Compare to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. An otherwise good campaign marred by a hamfisted bad guy. The death screen flavor text and what little you actually learn about the mars government make them an obvious and juvenile attempt at "bad guys"

Really its disappointing.
That in mind, I personally think that Infinite Warfare's campaign is still exceedingly well done, and I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for some kind of "gritty sci-fi" game, with a heavy dose of "Earth, FUCK YEAH" added to the mix.
