So this is basically just Japanese propaganda, right?

So this is basically just Japanese propaganda, right?

It's great, so who cares?

>who cares?

Exactly what I was going to start my post with.

The girls are top tier and for once the MC is an actual adult that oldfags like me can relate to/self-insert as. That's all the motivation I needed to read/watch it.

blatantly, and a very enjoyable anime too

No. Its biggest crime is showing the army as competent and not evil and Japanese government as relatively benevolent. This shouldn't really be an issue because its not like its the focus of the show. And the point of comparison is roman era isekai.

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei is far more unsettling

yep, that's what some guys were parroting last time i checked a gate thread

nah, just japenese smut
real propaganda is "women marrying weaboos" or "have kids" anime

The term you want is Jingoism

I still don't understand why they portrayed the Japanese government and media as against the army. Also they made the prince just too stupid.

>Its biggest crime is showing the army as competent
Not hard showing army being competent when you go against middle-age soldiers.

>Japanese government as relatively benevolent
Thats only they don't perceive Empire as a threat. They can afford to be soft. Also, they get all the oil and natural resources if they build good relations.

The real crime of GATE is Rory.
There is not a single otaku-bait character as big as her.

I think you're making too much out of those events. Media makes its living off controversy and bad news. And any democratic government has oversight and an opposition party. Select committees or equivalent where heads of departments, project leaders etc have to report things

She was too over powered in my view. Better if she wasn't as strong and had a more proper looking axe.
I still have to see an army that doesn't have soldiers who commit crimes.

it's about as jingoistic as an episode of GI Joe

The army only looks good because the heroes are the army.

Don't be a spoil sport.

Yes. It's also about as appealing as a roadside waffle-house bathroom floor.

it was a really interesting premise but the recent chapters make me care less and less

>How does everyone speak the same language?
>Why hasn't the USA gotten involved?

It's just strange having a harem protag who kills people with assault rifles. And the fact that he's divorced / not a virgin is just bizarre for the genre.

Well the opposition seemed to be attacking the army instead of the current party in charge. The PM is the one who should be attacked for not handling things appropriately.

>>How does everyone speak the same language?
They don't.
Most MC characters learned the other's language pretty quickly.

>>Why hasn't the USA gotten involved?
Politics. They can't just roll their tanks to gate if japan doesn't allow them.

>>How does everyone speak the same language?

I thought they didn't? Was that an anime only thing? I remember it coming up.

Has the MC even been shown killing anyone?

No one named

>It's just strange having a harem protag who kills people with assault rifles. And the fact that he's divorced / not a virgin is just bizarre for the genre.

This is why I really liked GATE. I'm a /k/ommando and a 30 year old otaku who might as well be divorced. (Lived with her for 5 years.)

The US did try and get involved by kidnapping the girls from the gate. But honestly I have no idea what kind of plan they had in mind.
They sent in their special forces but got slaughtered by the Japs special forces sasuga nippon soldiers, trained over 100 times, and then they meet the russians and chinese who were trying to do the same thing.

>The US did try and get involved by kidnapping the girls from the gate. But honestly I have no idea what kind of plan they had in mind.
Something like "if we can get them to say they want us there we can go". Or even just information from whoever they got would be really valuable.

> just Japanese propaganda, right?

The most blatant one, yes.

But 95% of other anime does it in a subtle way.

Then why would the russians and chinese even come up with the same plan. The Japs would rather look to the US for support.

Japanese is he best they could have hoped for, any other nation would restrict info and make it fake news propaganda and secretly genocide everything.

>the gate massacre was terrorists
>the sudden gate is their version of the trojan horse, we will seal off he area to investigate

US tried a sneak attack but superior jap black ops triumphed on their filthy attempt.

Because that would mean sharing.

Then why would Russia or China even bother to attempt anything? The Japs would just spread the news, the US would condemn the attacks on one of their best allies and then the Russians or Chinese would just have an ever worse reputation and would be detrimental to their foreign policy basically attacking a foreign country. The US had a trump card to play with the Jap PM so he couldn't do much but accept their offer.

because animu

I guess you're right

i guess you can call it propaganda, there's is a bit of that, yes, but it's really more nationalistic wish fulfillment similar to space battleship yamato

Because in real life japan, the diet wants to abolish the jsdf and be fully protected by US army because of their article 9 of the constitution

It'S NIPPON STRONK the light novel the manga the animation.

NIHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!!!!

>Then why would Russia or China even bother to attempt anything?

Because if the people on the other side of the gate WANT them there then the US and Russia or whomever can claim proper justification to get up in Japans space and as tough as the named characters and JDF are against goons they're not gonna be able to keep actual armies out of their business.

If the Japanese government tries to keep the other countries out then when the gate wants them Japan looks like the badguys

why is propaganda bad when someone else does it but not you?

ah now the kidnapping makes sense to me. Never actually thought about it.

because anything to do with nationalistic military nowadays will have bleeding hearts screaming propaganda!

So basically what the British did during the colonial era when it came to meeting new cultures for the first time. Kidnap a few and treat them very nicely then send them back.
But then Japan could just block any access to the gate until they can fix things up with those who were kidnapped as they have full access to the gate in the first place.

This propaganda meme needs to stop, if abe really wanted to do a propaganda in anime they would make a fucking high budget show about otakus getting laid or something to encourage them going out and breeding.

worst case scenario they would use it as a reason to war with japan.

"The people of the gate are not happy with japan. Japan is a tyrant!" excuse.

Either you share or lose everything

If the gate nations wanted other countries Japan would have no choice but to acquiesce and allow passage lest they be seen as trying to claim gate as their own territory against the wishes of it's people.

speaking of her, i wonder if her VA is pregnant?

It's great, leftist are mad at it because it exposes the lying press.

it's not propaganda, it's just shit

the JSDF wanking is just a way to avoid writing an actually interesting plot, same with the waifu harem bullshit

political intrigue? fantasy vs modern tactics? ethics/morality clashes?

fuck that, lets blow up a dragon and then go to a titty bathhouse while whining about missing out on doujin-con

it's like being jerked off by a stranger's cold rough hands - sure you might respond to it a bit a first but you'll still feel dirty and used the longer it goes on

shame because the premise was promising

It has kuri so I love it.

No, it's a Rory propaganda.

Propaganda for what?

Useless NEETS to go and join the army? Unlikely.

Japanese cartoon intended for the Japanese people is propaganda?

>propaganda does not occur on the home front

but it's fiction. no one is stating that is true.

you would have to be dumb to let yourself get brainwash because of a mongolian cartoon

Even taking out the massive jingoism, the series still has problems.

For one, the JSDF is stated to be leagues better than the other world's army. This basically erases any potential conflict since no matter how bad their relationship gets, the JSDF will always win. Why are there no mages in the other world's army, for instance?

The girls are still pretty much unnecessary. Tuka does jack shit in the series except cry for her daddy. Leilei does more for the JSDF, like translating and shit, but the fact that Tuka can use magic too doesn't really make her seem special. Rory is your generic "gothic Lolita who is secretly stronger than anyone else, but also wants to bone the MC for some reason", and having her in the JSDF is like Saitama joining forces with Superman - it doesn't even the battlefield at all. Yao hasn't done shit in the plot, and it feels like she was just added for affirmative action. So even though the JSDF has all these cute girls, the army still does all the heavy lifting. While only semi-related, Princess Pina doesn't really do anything to help aside from ogle gay porn and get captured by her brother.

Not to mention that the conflict is still hilariously black and white. Anyone who opposes the JSDF's intrusion is quickly written off as a pathetically evil villain. Zorzal could have been a viewpoint for why the empire doesn't want to have JSDF interference, but he just becomes Generic Rape Guy. The bunny girl playing both sides for revenge is an interesting concept, but it's only played halfway. Essentially, the series could have done better if it had more viewpoints than just the JSDF.

Honestly, I think this would have worked much better as a live action Netflix adaptation. Have the GATE be located in New York or Switzerland or somewhere, and the major nations of the world send a multicultural team to investigate. The main conflict is our world being integrated into theirs, although some conflicts in our army aren't ignored. Also scrap Rory

yes also shit because rory can use power of her god in our world and even ?steal soldiers souls? but it doesn't give any power to earth religions, why?

>Why are there no mages in the other world's army, for instance

There are, but magic has a range shorter than modern weapons. We saw Myuute fend off arrows with her magic in front of Italica but she still ended up prisoner. And the Empire nobles witnessing the mortar shots say that even magic wouldn't be able to fight them. The JSDF has howitzers and tanks.

>Yao hasn't done shit in the plot

She was the reason Itami was forced to go hunt the Flame Dragon due to her manipulation of Tuka.

>he just becomes Generic Rape Guy

Perfectly true

it's obvious wish fullfillment but damn it was good at it

GATE IS FUCKING AWESOME

besides, because of mecha, there is no good operator anime, so this is also the only thing

Is this one of those "b-baka gaijin! We only let you win WW2! We would've sliced those nukes in half with our gorillion times folded katanas!" or a satire that admits how stupid it is?

Either way it's over done to death

>GATE appears
>Get to be part of the expedition force that gets to be sent through.
>Spend a vast majority of your time setting up the base and securing the location.
>Mostly patrol, scouts, survey, weather, and other teams get to leave the base in order to get a good look around and do their jobs.
>You most likely won't be able to leave the base in order to explore this new world until first contact is made with a civilized group and diplomatic relations are created.
>The village you do get to visit after diplomatic relations is created will most likely be the same tier as a village in old Europe, filled with humans, and it'll be boring as shit with you not being able to speak the locals language as x-Gate language to your world translations is still being created. And you'll be looked at as an oddity who isn't suppose to be trusted all the way.
>Those 3-4 guys who cause an incident in the village by starting shit, or being inappropriate with a woman.

Just end me bros.

What? It has nothing to do with WW2. It's just an Isekai with JSDF forces exploring a new world.

its not even like either of these,
most the people who complain about "GATE propaganda" are jackasses

I'd read a bit of the LN fantranslation, and Itami speaking the language was explained by PiƱa knocking him out with the door at Italica and boom, he understood them.

It was weird.

I watched this right after I got into Civ5, which made it fun because it reminded me of my own glorious conquests.

>It's another "Americans complain about other people doing exactly the same than them"

Rory put his head in her lap when he was knocked out so there is speculation she did something to him.

So what? It doesn't promote guns or the killing of camel riders, doesn't it?

GATE is even more of a JAPAN STRONG series than shit like the Sacred Blacksmith.

It features the CIA Special Activities Division and the Spetsnaz Alfa group being defeated by the rank and file JSDF. It also has such scenes as some tiny Japanese woman killing 10 Praetorians in melee combat without a scratch.

Yes.
>muh honorable warrior spirit
>muh being underdogs
All while moving down guys with spears with attack helicopters, nippon banzai. Dropped this around the 4th episode.

>It features the CIA Special Activities Division and the Spetsnaz Alfa group being defeated by the rank and file JSDF.

>enemy walking into enemy territory/base surrounded by guards

>some big titty monster Japanese woman killing 10 Praetorians in melee combat with a gun

>speculah

oh god _yes

>CIA Special Activities Division
>Special Activities Division

Do you have a source? If not, they're just CIA agents caught in a firefight with entrenched SFs on their own ground with drone support and two other foreign units pushing for the same prize.

>Spetsnaz Alfa group

Source on the Russians infiltrating armed Spetsnaz so fast? They're supposed to be just CBP agents.

>enemy walking into enemy territory/base surrounded by guards

not!Bush was trying his hardest to get the girls, no expenses spared, including blackmailing the jap PM. Other leaders probably were, too.

>some big titty monster Japanese woman killing 10 Praetorians in melee combat with a gun

They were the prince's buddies, not Imperial Guards. And she only kills like three with her bayonet before hip-firing in anger in their formation.

Come on, it's all retarded, arguing about it is pointless. Let's just enjoy Kuri's hard nipples.

Talking about the CIA. Majority of their operations are conducted with the assistance of the US military, their own SOs, or their own SAD agents.

An operation like the one in GATE would've required SAD or USM operatives due to its importance and wouldn't have been shit.

I've a suggestion.

Get the sixth* episode, and drink every time something ridiculous happens.
I can promise good times.

*there is zero need to watch the fifth episode, or for that matter, the episodes from the seventh onward.

>I still don't understand why they portrayed the Japanese government and media as against the army.
It wasn't until very recently that the JSDF was viewed in a positive light. The JSDF is where the dregs of Japanese society or those from bumfuck towns in Japan go do time.

Could that have been achieved within the three days the gang came to Japan?

Or within the night they were in the ryokan?

Yes.

>tfw the JSDF was once a national police force during occupation and mostly got people from the disbanded Imperial Army and Navy.

>that episode when Rory and his platoon burned whole village and raped little kids
What the fuck? I thought it was kid show

Yeah also that Mark Wahlberg cameo

Okay.

We're still arguing real life stuff about a fantasy story where a gate to another world opens. I was banned for three days a year ago for this...

A straight up snatch-and-grab operation could've been carried out in three days.

The statement
>GATE is a really JAPAN STRONG series
is a basis for a completely relevant discussion, and the stuff we're arguing about pertains to it directly.

Even with the US-trained jap SF, the Russians and the Chinese in the way? The PSIA was on the lookout, Itami hid in his ex-wife's flat for a night, and then they split up until the ryokan with entrenched defenders. I don't know shit about foreign militaries.

Also magical demigoddess with a 200 kilos halberd.

except they were trying to kidnapp the MC and a fucking demigod

I just meant that arguing about GATE plot relevancy in our own world on Sup Forums got me three days in January 2016.

During my jail time I witnessed an entire thread about weapons, ammunition calibers and /k/ shit with no repercussions.

Fuck the mods.

>but the recent chapters make me care less and less
I have the opposite reaction. These recent chapters have been the best GATE has ever been. Now instead of just sucking Japans cock, it's about the cast travelling around the fantasy world and interacting with people. There is honest intrigue and worldbuilding going on here.
The side chapters that deal with the incidental characters are funny. Most recently the furry chicks losing their fur and the japanese CDC then finding out it's because of the shampoo they used. It's stuff like that, just minor interactions between cultures that I find interesting.
If I squint it's becoming They who Hunt Elves and I'm ok with that.

Oh well. Sup Forums and its mods sure have changed since I first started posting here more than a decade ago.

>Get the sixth* episode, and drink every time something ridiculous happens.
Are you trying to kill me?

>Are you trying to kill me?
Come on, it's just 24 minutes of binge drinking.

>She was the reason Itami was forced to go hunt the Flame Dragon due to her manipulation of Tuka.

And afterward, she just stays with the cast and does absolutely nothing of consequence.

Not like she has anywhere else to go since she was basically exiled and the majority of her village were killed. She has no real obligation to go back to them after the dragon business was over.

Read the manga, the anime is shit.

>It's great
>The girls are top tier

She is persona non grata for her whole people, which is why she stays with Itami in the maze.

I just wish the conflict wasn't so blatantly black and white and was less one sided, with the empire at least trying out some ways to even out the massive technological differences by using shit like guerilla warfare and insurgency tactics. Hell, you could've made the propaganda/nationalist levels more tolerable just by making the empire more of a legitimate threat.

I feel like the entire thing is full of ideas that should've been taken to its full extent instead of being half assed.

If it doesn't promote America First policy, its jingoistic and nationalistic.

No other country is allowed to be competant.

Nihons are just dreaming about some nore land and resourses. Just dreaming.

Fun fact the editors made the author turn the patriotism in this down when they where making this and this is what we got.

>insurgency tactics
Well that kinda did happen with the bunny warrior being sent in to kill after being given fake orders.
