Generally speaking, there is more variation now than 10 years ago. If you pay attention you'll notice that there are less stereotypical battle harems of the "boy meets girl"-type with one main girl and a bunch of orbiters, and more atypical ones that actually become harems. The quality of the literature has plummeted as a result though, because these "authors" are actually amateurs.
