On 17 July 2014, MH17 was shot down flying over eastern Ukraine. All 298 passengers died, 193 of them Dutch. After investigation it was determined that the missile used was the Buk 332 of the Russian 53rd Anti-Aircraft Rocket Brigade based in Kursk, Russia.
So, all signs point to Russia or Russian backed rebels, either deliberately or accidentally shooting down the plane.
What are the odds that it was neither, but a third party placed a false flag attack? What could be their motive?
