They got their minds blown by Evangelion, which used them a lot.

As for why Anno was obsessed with them, I have no clue, but he's a depressed, self-loathing geek, so who really cares?

It's part of their landscape? Why do you think Americans like road-trips that much?

Because that's exactly how they are over there?

Powerlines are a Japanese invention so it's only natural for them to obsess over something they made

It's the only thing they can see from their rooms.

I never understood the cityscape thing. I know Anno is autistic, so that's why he loves them so much, but everyone else?

...

There is no obsession. The whole reason these shots were invented was to give context in form of the time of day, weather and audio (cicada noises etc.) and to cut away from another scene as a kind of breather.

The reason power lines and such are used is because you don't have to think about them. They are such ordinary and self explanatory objects that you don't question their existence. I'm not just making this up, for example sometimes you get similar filler shots like this where somethings actually going on, like 2 bugs fighting or whatever, but after seeing that you will actually think about the bugs or why they're finding which destroys the purpose of these shots; which is a breather.

I forgot the name of the guy who basically invented these kind of shots.

He's autistic. He'd rather do Ultraman poses instead of finishing Evangelion.

In short, blame Ozu via Anno

What time of day is this? It looks too bright to be night?

the blue hour, that time right before sunrise or right after sunset and vastly superior to both, which are overrated as far as times of day go, especially sunset, that's the most annoying time of day, with the sun hitting you straight into the eyes.

>power lines are a Japanese invention
Dude NICE

Thanks

After doing some digging, Japs apparently love overhead poles since subterranean ones get damaged from all the seismic activity.

Remember, it's the best time of the day

Don't know but it's aesthetic as fuck and I love it. Their obsession with the sky and clouds is my fetish. Fuck yes. Sunsets and starry skies especially. And blue skies with white puffy clouds during a breezy spring day, or dark and stormy clouds during an early autumn afternoon...oh god MY DICK

pls don't masturbate over the weather

>sunset
>most annoying time of day
>not 10am which is when the sun is always in your eyes and everything is bright and painful and everything is irritating except on the rare occasion when it's not
>but it usually is
9am - 12pm is worst time of day, objectively.

Yeah theres something about them.

Why not? There's not much left we've haven't probably fapped to anyway.

Fuck you I do what I want. I even have an entire folder on my computer dedicated to clouds, skies, and other beautiful scenery for me to masturbate to.

Some people fap to cute girls. Me? I fap to beautiful skies.

Norway?

NW USA, actually. But Norway works too.

The only decent 10am is when the lighting outside is of that of 3-4pm, or it's an autumn morning and everything is wet from the rain but the sun is out and so are dark clouds.

...

...

Noice.

you can look up Japan in google streetview

nope sunset is, because the sun is hitting you directly on the face unless there's stuff blocking it, plus there's also the accumulated heat of the day's sun exposure, early morning can be bright but not as bad since things are still fresh coming out of night's cooling shadow.

Sunset is worst girl with Noon close behind. the Blue Hour Twins are best grills with night time blue having a slight edge.

>earth is curving
fucking sphereists

btw pic related is also an acceptable 10am, though it could be a 1pm. either way, it reminds me of being a little kid and playing sonic adventure 2 battle and playing that one marine harbor level over and over and over and over and over

it's called the golden hour for a reason you sandnigger

just look away from it jesus christ sunsets where i live are literally the most beautiful sunsets i've ever laid my eyes upon. they never disappoint.

accumulated heat? it's always cool in sunset no matter what time of year where i live. early morning is way too bright and it's always in my fucking face.

go take your reactionary bullshit taste somewhere else, pleb

I like these for some reason too.

I look at these pictures of clear skies or these big fluffy clouds and listen to this and I can breathe better. youtube.com/watch?v=epc3hVbVMNw

you must be too up north and that must be giving you a distorted view of what sunsets really are like for most of humanity.

...

Love that song, love blue skies like that too.

sorry for 3dpd but i needed it to describe my favorite aesthetic. i used to live in a shithole trailer court but we frequently had rainbows in the sky there during the evening in spring and autumn after it'd rain, it'd sort of look like this. the dark gray clouds would still be overhead and to the east but behind me would be the sun, giving everything a warm glow as it would set, and the rainbow would be in the middle of it. the wind would be blowing softly and the air would be cool. and i'd fly my kite with my friend till the sun sets, staring at the rainbow so longingly. fuck i wish i had a camera because even this lovely picture doesnt do what i saw as a child justice. i think it's even where my sexual attraction to scenery porn started. muh fucking dick.

I live in Montana so not really. Sure when you're driving it can be annoying but that goes for any time of the day. We Montanans know how to appreciate nature and especially sunsets. And nature appreciates us in return by giving us the most beautiful ones nearly every single day. Literally the comfiest shit you will ever experience is a Montana sunset. (Mainly in my town.) Go sit in a field with a blanket wrapped around you and watch as it makes the mountains around you glow.

Never heard of someone taking interest in porn scenery besides le casting couch meme.

I mean if you want the truth I'm literally masturbating to these images right now so.

Well there are worse things to fap to so at least there's that.

Nothing to do with nips.
Power lines are cool.

I like to imagine that, every time he sits down to work on 4.0, he falls out of his chair like a giant in slow motion, Aoi Hono style.

That's not much of a prediction:

Truly patrician taste, staying awake all night just to see the sky turn into that amazing color is sublime.

It's an easy way to get a complex image

The look of them and the buzz is part of what they live with. It's a well established image.

I can't even get to that level of drawing. Photoshop? So many layers with so many different coats.

It makes for a good aestetic choice, honestly.

They're a human construct, they make for good filler shots.
And if you try to be the edgy philosopher they are a good representation of a story.

You have the sky and the infinite universe above, on the background.
While a tiny post, connected with wires, is closer to us.

"Every story is little and insignificant compared to the vastity of the night sky. But because of prospective, even a little lampost can be interesting."

Even if you're not that edgy, It's a way to show the sky and add a touch of blue to the scene.
Blue is calming, comfy and relaxing, a great color to fill and stop a scene.
Gives the watcher a nice breath.

How do these artists make such lively and gorgeous scenery?

Talent+Tons and tons of hard, borderline autistic hard work and training.

Yeah faggot.
Because Evangelion invented fucking power lines.

we mexicans might have the same love for power lines as the japs, but I don't know about small cities.

I do this every night before bed.

Have you seen Japan? That's the imagery they experience every day of their lives, nonstop.

...

I'm done now.

>not having a power line fetish
Pleb as fuck, bet you dont even like condenser banks.

I really like giant clouds forming at the sea horizon right during an blue sky day, user.
I wonder if Japan have those weather often because I see so many of art works featuring it, especially in the summer.
Too bad, my shit city is full of desert.

Fellow desert dweller. I hate the weather here more than anything. It's already starting to get hot again.

>power poles at sunset
>empty classroom at twilight
>riding a bike with a cityscape in the background and the sun being periodically obscured by the buildings

etc

Anime just keeps re-using the same sets over and over because anime is, at its core, a creatively barren and derivitive artform.

No one wants to try anything different. Everyone just wants to ape each other and steal their ideas to seem as deep as them, without attempting to understand why its deep, or why it evokes those emotions.

They think "We will just set this scene in a classroom at twilight. Ring up the Korean painters and tell them to paint a scene like in this other anime and it will be fine"

The anime industry is truly loathsome, and I can't imagine why people still willingly consume the tasteless mush that spills forth from it.

That's what the skyline looks in Japan, especially in slightly older towns (newer towns burry their power lines, as you'd expect). There's nothing more to it; if you look up to the sky in the street in Japan, it'd looks something like that.

Powerlines are like this cause of the earthquakes.

There are more people living in small cities than you would think

That version is nice but I much prefer this one.

They're called "pillow shots" and were popularized by Yasujirou Ozu.

Why are you on Sup Forums then?

>No one wants to try anything different.
What would you like to see?

>sakura petals gently resting on this garden
>the sound of cicadas
>the bitter breeze from Fuji-san

etc

Haiku just just keeps re-using the same sets over and over because haiku is, at its core, a creatively barren and derivitive artform.

No one wants to try anything different. Everyone just wants to ape each other and steal their ideas to seem as deep as them, without attempting to understand why its deep, or why it evokes those emotions.

They think "I will just set this scene in a veranda at twilight. Grind that charcoal and bring my brush and start playing your samisen like in this haiku anime and it will be fine"

The haiku industry is truly loathsome, and I can't imagine why people still willingly consume the tasteless mush that spills forth from it.

Good one, but I think your point will go over his head

Why do Americans have this obsession with guns in their movies? Just a general question.

Retard.

Why do modern stories have this obsession with vehicles in their movies? Just a general question.

Like this guy said in , those things you complain about are just part of their aesthetic identity. The scenographic snapshots are the visual analogue of this >en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigo
adapted and modified by Ozu to better fit immersion in a medium such as film.

It's like scenery descriptions in literature, particularly in opening paragraphs. Lots of critics hate them and complain about their lack of originality while others judge them by their own merit. Why? Because it's just part of the 'meta' or something. Some books are judged solely for them. I, for one, like them quite a bit and when reading, I pay close attention to those details because they tell me of an author's tastes and just how good his craft is at evoking feelings and pictures using only words printed on a piece of white paper.

I'm not saying anime in general is usually original or innovative. There are other elements to judge this, and Ozu shots are certainly not something I'd complain about.

Btw, OP should also wonder why so many painters use tables, jars and fruits as subjects in their paintings.

>I wonder if Japan have those weather often because I see so many of art works featuring it, especially in the summer.
Japan dweller here. Yes, that weather is very common. But it is also accompanied by death inducing humidity. It looks incredible especially in the southern Islands i've been to like Goto, but it feels like shit.

I like where you're going with this. There is a saying that got thrown around by one of my design profs all the time. "A soft execution of sharp idea is worse than a sharp execution of a soft idea." I think this can be applied to these ambient images used in anime. There are subtleties to how well these ambient imageries are used for their particular shows. Some are excellent, some are forgettable. But they are simply ambience. I think OP might be looking for more, when there might not be more to be had. Ambient imagery only goes so far, it's visual language that most artists can speak. Sometimes, it's not the point of the show that is being made to create new words. Some will certainly try though.

I dunno im guessing thats just how the majority of middle class neighbourhoods look like in Japan?

Don't let this comfy thread die ;_;

Thanks for the great papes anons.

Sorry for the 3DPD, actually can a drawfag redo this? I just take this shot in the train station I'm right now.

because theyre so damn beautiful

>OP should also wonder why so many painters use tables, jars and fruits as subjects in their paintings.
Because they reflect light in specific ways (especially jars) and are part of still lifes, which are not supposed to have moving objects in their set up. They're essential for learning about the placement of shadows or changing of color in certain circumstances.

The photography class I'm in has a couple rules for pictures and power lines aren't allowed because they're too cliche.

Because... that's how Japan look like?

Nice input, ESL.
