God is a description of the full metaphysical properties of the universe, the only people who don't believe this are fundamentalist christians and fundamentalist atheists. Both of which also believe instead that God is a magic-man in the sky (with the atheists simply tacking on 'who doesn't exist' to the end of that claim).
God cannot abandon us any more than gravity can. It simply is. What CAN change is our individual and cultural consciousness of such a thing.

There's no comfortable way back at this point. Most of society makes it clear that they are beyond not believing, they actively oppose Christianity and hate God. They have wandered too far and their civilization will collapse on itself. Just as with Noah's ark or Sodom and Gomorrah, distance yourself from their evil and focus on living for God.
