I think we should return to the root of the word dictator. In ancient Rome, a "dictator" wasn't a bad guy or a tyrant, he was a man given absolute power FOR ONE YEAR to do the shit that needs to be done, but that can't be done in the regular political system.
70% of the problems facing most democracies can be easily resolved by a single year of dictatorship followed by a return to democracy. Of course, the key part is finding a person who won't be a collosal dickhead and will actually relinquish power after the year passes.

It was easier to do in Rome. They'd just stab the guy repeatedly, and even then fags like Sulla abused the dictator office so bad the Republic degenerated into almost constant civil wars until Octavian rekt everyone and crowned himself emperor.
It's a delicate balance, but could theoretically be constitutionally regulated (ie the dictator can do whatever during his tenure with full legal immunity, but if he steps out of line/tries to fuck with the constitution/tries to make himself a permanent fixture, then the law would give every citizen the legal right to kill said dictator and the first one to do it gets to claim all their property and assets)
