Dude in the case of Chile most of them weren't even communists. There was this system during Allende's government that would benefit you if you were from the leftist party, more access to food (which was quite scarce), housing, etc. But most joined for the upgrade it'd meant, not because they sympathized with the communist party. Once Pinochet took over they went and killed them, not looking at their back story, not considering why they joined, no nothing. You're dead for trying to make things easier for you and your family. Not to mention the military had total control over their actions, and they could simply kill you if you did as much as to glare at them if they pleased, regardless of your political alignment. HOWEVER you shouldn't be alluding to being an "experiment for a new economic model" as a bad thing when Chile was an economic success. I mean yes things could have gone wrong, but they didn't.
