There are lots of new bands with a fresh sound, great riffs and solos. From a creativity standpoint, rock 'n roll is alive and well. The problem is the steady decline in popularity in the last two decades or so. I don't know if this phenomenon is (((engineered))) or not, but it's a shame considering all the talented kids out there that won't get the massive exposure they deserve (at least not on the scale other genres' artists are getting nowadays)

I think the big problem today is that anyone learning an instrument today can watch YouTube videos and learn at a much faster pace than those pre-internet. Technical ability is definitely better across the board as kids can watch step-by-step (and slowed down) how to duplicate very difficult musical passages. Rock music in the anglosphere, at least at the top end, was all about the songwriter/performer, with a heavy emphasis on lyricism. Since everyone spoke the same language natively a lot of meaning could be loaded into the lyrics.
Contrast with Europe, where the focus was "danceability" as a way to transcend different cultures and languages. That doot-doot-doot Euro/electroca/dance music (whatever its called) killed rock music and coopted hip-hop in the anglosphere in the interest of the 'international markets'. We've seen the same happen a bit also with movies, as all meaning and cultural-knowledge have been replaced by computer generated "fun!"

There's still great local bands and scenes.
I think there's a point to made that epic, legendary bands, and the reasons for their creation and continuity, do not exist anymore, and therefore do not ascend in popularity and prevalence, and therefore are not on the top of the charts.
Why? A couple reasons:
1. The drug/hippie/radical socialist culture that allowed, structured, and protected an environment of soulful and genuine creativity and exploration doesn't exist anymore.
2. The newness of rock/metal, that sort of excitement from a new creation, has lost its edge and momentum. As Rick Rubin stated, the last great, newly-created rock sound was from System of a Down, that Armenian rap-metal swing and jam
3. The internet has diluted and saturated the sound waves with a bunch of shit.
4. The youth have been neutralized and aren't as daring as they used to be a couple decades ago. They'd rather chill on the computer rather than go out and get high/spontaneously found bands and so forth
5. It's true, a general growing disdain for culture that appears "white" or unabashedly upholds or is inspired by "whiteness".
6. Perhaps just a general coincidence that great bands, despite the lack of culture that allowed for their creation, haven't appeared lately.

Hip hop is a 5-10 second beat with unskilled vocals talking about things people like. Pop is a singer's (there are millions of people who can sing) vocals dumped over an already successful electronic track, usually trance genre.
Ive listened to electronic music since the 90s, its really incredible how much top 40 pop is generic vocals laid over a 5 year old trance track.
