As a southerner I can give you some insight into why I dislike socialism as an economic system. I disagree with the notion that the federal government is adept, disciplined, and competent in handing out benefits or deciding who is deserving of said benefits. I disagree that health insurance is a human right (hospitals have NEVER turned away someone in need of care, thus universal care has existed for a long time in this country). Welfare perpetuates laziness in people who are not truly in need, is an abused system, and is now considered as a safety net to some who may not perform their occupation to the best of their abilities. It's kind of like that old saying from good old Ben Frank “I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.” In the south, despite what many may think about us, receiving benefits from the government is shameful and is looked down upon. Fact is that if you earn 100k you take home 60k. If your living expenses I. The city are 40k then you can save 20k.
Meanwhile, if I earn 50k I take home 40k. Since my expenses are half of yours, I have the same 20k to save. The difference of course is that 50k in a skilled trade is achievable while six figures in the city requires you to suck up and get lucky.

The more you can force people to work together, either socially or legally, the better the society you can create. Not everyone wants a better society, so it is up to a governing power to enforce this to the greatest degree that they can successfully.
