1999 or 2011 anime?

1999 or 2011 anime?

I've watched the first episode of both now. I prefer the 90s look and the music is godly but the 1999 version seems to be more fillerish.

Funny coincidence... I started watching HxH for the first time last month, and did exactly the same.

I too liked the 1999 version's visuals and style more, so I semi-marathoned through that first, OVAs and all. Started 2011 version a week or so ago, now at ep 30, and it feels and looks so lazy and bad in comparison. There's been tiny bits and pieces that I've liked in the 2011 version, but for the most parts it has felt like some cheaå FoxKid's adaptation, with an art-director with huge CYM color palette fetish.

>the 1999 version seems to be more fillerish.
more like the 2011 version lacks character introductions completely, and doesn't even want to build atmosphere and emotional connections with characters.
If there was any legit "filler" in 99 version, it made the show better IMO. Not to mention it has some ACTUAL animation, not just quick flashes of static images w/ flashing SFX backgrounds, plus the more earthly tones + dark contrast make the old series more pleasing to watch. The 2011's makers constantly make western folks blond, and even plain out skip shading at times.

Watch 99 and read the manga. Then catch up on 11 before the 99 ovas.

99 is a thousand times better.

1999 until Greed Island, 2011 Greed Island and beyond.

Although 2011 second ED is pretty kick ass.

KONO TAIYOU HA YORU MO KAGAYAITE

Yorkshin arc was so goddamn awesome and stylish.

2011 is better overall, people who say1999 version is better are all grandpas that can't stand the new generation kids, so they hate on anything new.

Watch the 1999 TV anime. Don't watch the OVA continuations, read the manga instead (from the start).

The first episode of 99 is actually how it is in the manga, 2011 skipped a bunch of shit for no reason in their first episode.

Oi, the yorkshin ova is goat.

Just watch both... There's never gonna be another anime or chapter so you have plenty of time. It would be better to start with 99 though for Kite and some char development and because if you watch 2011 first, you will get the 'much 1080p' syndrome.

2011 is inferior in all possible ways, and I had zero knowledge nor experience with HxH before earlier this year. You gotta be seriously blind or a fan of budget-saving ""animation"", shitty pacing, spoon feeding narrative done via literal narrator, and worst possible editing trends, to dig 2011 version.

tl;dr: Madhouse-fags are delusional as fuck.

t. plebbit

I watched 2011 first and then 1999 + OVAs and I'm deeply convinced that this is the best order to watch it in, since there is a lot that was left out in 2011 and 99 is superior in almost every way.
They completely left out the first episode in 11 for some reason, where the fuck is Kite? How are people supposed to care about him later? I couldn't give two shits when he died, good job madhouse. The entire boat thing during the hunter exam was absent for no reason as well, which took away some of Kurapika's character development, but I think the character who suffered the most was Leorio. In 2011 his personality was reduced to pretty much nothing but "I need money" and being angry 90% of the time, he was only there for jokes.

99 had a better color palette but the animation is better in 2011 for obvious reasons. But just take a look at pic related, dear god why? She looks fucking horrible.

I personally prefer watching 2011 though for a reason not even I know. Maybe I just like the voices better, I have no idea.

99 has a pretty cool atmosphere, music and animation, but it's slow as fuck and has some filler.
11 is faster-paced, but it looks like yet another 00s generic battle shounen (which is actually a plus on some arcs).

I'd rec you to watch 99 until the end of Yorkshin (the first OVA) and then swap to 11.

What did he mean by this?

>That ending
My nigga

What you didnt watch porn with your friend when you were kids?

Alright, 1999 anime it is then for now.

Thanks for your input guys.

>The entire boat thing during the hunter exam was absent for no reason as well

The entire boat thing was filler, which is surprising considering how “not shit” it is. The people who did 1999 had a good grasp on what is HxH, unlike the people at Madhouse with those two awful movies they made.

How a series can go from having one of the worst ED's ever in ED1 to one of the best in that song beyond me.

I didn't have friends when I was a kid but I watched boku no pico with two friends who were equally as disgusted as me about two years ago

>older brother of a friend burns us a cd with chasey lain i believe it was
>talk about it with a friend
>"oh, let me show you something else i got, don't get hard alright"

Good times.

>tfw both of you pop a boner and no one says a thing
>it's just awkward silence and staring at the screen while sitting uncomfortably

...

the answer is always 99

You sound excessively critical for what is a great adaptation. The old version has a great atmosphere, but none of them are bad, you people just love to take sides and shitpost.

>but it's slow as fuck
the hell it is. It actually knows how to use build-up for both atmosphere and to demonstrate the character's experiences (ie that slow recovery from the dart poison during 2nd to last exam phase), and in general isn't directed like a generic MTV trash nowadays. Not to mention it does way better job ending the episodes, not doing annoying cliffhanger ends as often as 2011.

>You sound excessively critical for what is a great adaptation
No, I just have standards. So far nothing in 2011 has impressed me one bit, and all the skipped material and shitty changes have done nothing but annoy me. If this crap counts as "great adaptation" nowadays, then anime of 2010s is as dead as modern video game industry.

Not to mention you fags haven't bothered to give any arguments in 2011's favor so far, and now you're even triviliazing your own posts by succumbing to literal Ad Hominem bullshit.

I found it, my favorite screencap.

Did someone say grids? Because I think someone just said grids.

I like the 99 atmosphere, but the slow pacing ruins both HA and GI.

Have a non-shit version.
GI in general was pretty average in 99, but Hunter Exam (which I'm assuming you meant by HA) was spot on, what didn't you like about it?

>but the slow pacing ruins both HA and GI.
I disagree completely. If 1999 GI is "slow", then I don't even want to know what kind of super-speed AHDH crap kids these days are "enjoying".

Calm sections are literally part of film-making 101, yet this shit seems to be totally foreign idea to many modern studios.

I think by HA he meant heaven's arena

>but the slow pacing ruins both HA and GI.
fuck no. Especially Heaven's Arena (I assume ya mean that?) was fucking perfect, overshadowed only by Yorkshin.
No idea what is people's beef with GI 1999 as well; literally the only criticism I can think of towards it was the lazy first version of the OP animation in the FINAL OVAs, which they rightfully improved for the later half.

Oh damn, I actually forgot that it existed for a second. Sorry for that one, have some more grids.

1999 for the atmosphere/animation

2011 for the ost

>If there was any legit "filler" in 99 version, it made the show better IMO.
This, all the filler episodes are good. Except that one with the wannabe crafty guy that faked a sprained ankle and made them give him a piggyback ride. But that one was a chapter from the manga that got expanded.

99 Heavens Arena was "ok" but 99 Greed Island was really fucking slow.
I don't think using 10 episodes (half of the OVAs) to show the training was a good idea.

>Illumi's green suit
I forgot how shitty that looked.

honestly the only illumi outfit I remember is the one with the boob window

tfw people actually downloaded my torrent

>99 Heavens Arena was "ok"
as someone who's now seen both versions within mere weeks apart, 1999 version impressed me much more. Only Hisoka fight in 2011 got even close to the 1999's tension and animation, and even then the 11 version definitely paled in comparison to the older adaptation.

The 2011 falls to some literal rookie film maker traps, namely doing too little showing, too little explaining verbally. The super simplified shading and odd departure from more earthly colors also just puzzle me.

>namely doing too little showing, too little explaining verbally
Just like the manga.

This looks so damn good. I fucking hate digital animation. It takes almost all the character out of the work.

Considering it's the best release for the original series + Yorkshin OVA that's not surprising.

There is a tiny animal with a single leg, a transparent belly, grinding jaws inside said belly, furry lip, zero to five eyes. One particular species, well:
>Unlike any other known animal, ordinary bdelloids routinely "import" pieces of DNA from their food and surroundings, capping their chromosomes with gene fragments from other animals, plants, fungi or even bacteria. These cross-kingdom genetic "patches" may continue to perform the same functions for the rotifer that they did for their original owners - sometimes involved in metabolic or immune defense processes, for instance - and will be passed on to all of the rotifer's cloned daughters. In a purely non technical sense, these creatures have evolved to "mate" with absolutely anything that has DNA; even a mold spore sucked into its grinding innards.

Where were you when chimera ant arc confirmed for nonfiction.

>Just like the manga.
And there's been several cases in the history where the anime adaptation has improved the manga's story and / or presentation, a lot. In this case, HxH 99 clearly seems to be one of them, no matter that it is "unfinished".

Different media formats should be utilized differently, focusing on their strong points and cutting off extensive fat that would be just in your way in the other format.

My sentiments exactly, have some qt Paku.

I would marry and breed with this paku.

>1999
>takes cat and returns it to the other cats, some metaphor or something
>2011
>nyas at cat

are you guys just saying this shit to be ironic or are you actually just grandpas who can't move on? 99 version looks dark and ugly with the cell shading and the characters look stagnant and uninspired compared to the 2011 version (look no further than the phantom troupe). not to mention the fight scenes are a 1000 times better

m8, ed1 was the fucking shit, how dare you

Why do people always need to reduce a comparison between an old, good anime with a bad, new anime to "i hate digitial"? Is there no room for nuance in your worldview?

She did meow at the cat in 99 too, let me just make a webm real quick.

basic human psychology of grouping things seemingly related to each other into big, easier to handle chunks.

In this case, older methods and mentality delivered objectively and subjectively better results, requiring more time and effort to reach such levels as well. Meanwhile, the modern "shortcuts" and "more with less" mentality have cheapened the presentation and even content of various media products. Thus, we got a simple red vs blue situation, where the conclusion is also black and white.

okay quick question
what was the purpose of this?

Wanna guess how I know you were born somewhere around the year 2000? You use term "ironic", unironically, when trying to explain behavior that does not fit your world view.

Sorry, but 2011 is cheap and even plain ugly as fuck looking trash compared to the 1999 original.
Funny that you mentioned the fights, since there's absolutely no feel of weight or visible damage and pain in the 11 version.

Because it's almost never an improvement. It's faster and cheaper, nothing else. You can also compare manga artists before and after digital.

I do hope we get to a point where we can get something like Paperman from every animation studio. By that I mean work that emulates traditional animation.

Show how soft and tender the seats were of course.

>tfw alredy on episode 54
>see all this beautiful 99 animation

do i miss anything if i skip chapters?

i want to die.

I actually like the right better. It shows more of a contrast between Killua's perception of Illumi and the bystander's perception of Illumi.

It's been a while since I read Yorknew arc, but doesn't she just meow at it in the manga? If I'm remembering right, then that kind of captures the difference between the adaptations. 99 tries to add something meaningful to HxH, 2011 just follows the manga panel by panel and even fucks that up.

Just go back and read the manga from the start. Save the anime for when you're caught up and angry about hiatuses.

It is so easy to trigger '99 fags, jeez.

Pomf is effectively sabotaging my upload by now, so instead of the whole scene I uploaded just the nyan to /wsg/, here

Pomf is dead my.mixtape.moe/dcotoy.webm

2011. I'm surprised to say that since I'm old and usually prefer old animes. But the 1999 HxH is boring as fuck, the chara-design isn't so great, and it's way too slow. But it has amazing music, better than the 2011 one, I admit that.
Of course the best is still the manga.

Is the manga music any good?

>manga
>music

The manga has the worst soundtrack of all. It's way too quiet.

The jazz tracks in 99 really add to the mellow somber vibe of the Yorkshin arc.

Plus the 2nd opening is by far the best HxH opening out of any version.

yeah, they fucked up the volume

Depending on where you read it can have a nice ambient sound.

I kind of want to go on a real life journey to reread HxH in appropriate locations for authentic background noise now.

>All these 99bros
Feels good.
I started off HxH with the 2011 dub, went and dived into the manga and saw '99 to see the differences. '99 blew 2011 out the water. Even the filler transitioned seamlessly with the canon story. And the dub cast was better, too. Elanor sounded like an actual twelve year-old breaking into puberty.

Greed Island wasn't bad, either. But the visual style was a step backwards. The animation was good, though.

>spoiler
Delete this.

Where would you go? Can I come?

Do they live near North Korea? This is important

I remember reading about some primitive archaea or something obtaining traits from other archaea they ate, but this is an actual animal.

I, for one, would suggest mount everest for the zoldyck family arc

New York is the obvious pick for the Yorknew arc. North Korea for the latter part of Chimera Ant. Not sure on the rest.

I'd suggest a random ass forest in the middle of nowhere for part of the hunter exam

A narco infested Columbian forest for the first half of CA seems pretty obvious. Not sure there's an appropriate place for Greed Island though.

I hope you have lots of money.

The newer one

2011 version is objectively better than 1999 version. the 1999 version is outdated trash compared to the 2011 one get over it.

Nice nonexisting arguments there, mate.
Like said many times, 1999 nails the visual design, pacing and directing way better than the 2011 one.

Plebs. The 99 version is a lot better, except for a few episodes and scenes 2011 is shit.

1999, don't listen to 2011fags. It's awful

the only good thing 2011 did was pull in more fans and give us an animated version of CA and some great EDs

1999 is objectively superior when it comes to OST, art style, and direction.

I only really think the Yorkshin OVA stands out adaption wise for both series. Otherwise I'm indifferent and don't really find either adaption outstanding.

On another note I kind of like the ridiculous voice Hisoka has in the original

Both execute the atmosphere they're trying to go for really well. They both have their one strengths and weaknesses. Everyone who thinks that one can be objectively better than the other should fuck off. I like both soundtracks but I think the original is used more effectively. Like with the art, because it has a more classic feel to it, people will gravitate more towards it but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's "better" because there is no better outside of opinions. Meanwhile, I dislike a lot of the character designs and colors used in the original like how Gon and Leorio look and Hisoka's and Canary's hair colors. Art-wise, outside of cherry-picked scenes, the original tends to either look off-model or just wonky far more often than 2011 and has moments of impressive animation about as often. When it is impressive, it's often more impressive in the original but like I said, those moments tend to be cherry-picked and I think 2011 generally looks better. The original is also hampered by the shitty DVD rips, which make it look more dark than it should. Both voice tracks are similarly case-by-case with me, like how I like Satotz' new voice much more but prefer the older Killua's voice. Both dubs are sort of terrible but Hisoka's pretty great in each, I guess.

2011 version is better
