A had an argument about that with a colleague a few months ago, my point was that we should let the birthrates drop and take the brunt for a few decades aiming to have a sustainable and optimal population. I would argue that 3.5 Billion to 5 Billion would be an optimal world population for comfortable living for everyone. No-one agrees, people say it will stabilize at 10 billion, but imagine how shitty it will be if it is like this right now.

Because social policies were put in place years ago that depend on continual economic growth and a younger generation to support an ever aging population (eg. Social Security/retirement, healthcare costs, Medicare). Basically a ponzi scheme.
It would be more manageable if people were less tied to the state. However, by introducing all these costs you've essentially made your children and future generations slaves to continually increasing economic growth and population demographics. If you've decreased the birth rate, you need to have greater economic growth to make up for the added economic pressure. Otherwise, something is going to give. Eventually the bubble will have to burst or slowly weened off of it as reality sets in.
