Thoughts on the isekai genre?

What about when the protagonist can come back from death? Isn't this cheating?

Cheating to what? To who? You, the reader?

His powerlevel is so low it makes the it more interesting especially when the villains have bullshit power ups instead of the MC.

[X] Rape the maids.

Isekai is a blessing to writers, it's template makes it easy for you to just site down and write.
plot, world building, character development - all basic in a isekai setting.

Not being isekai and straight up fantasy means the character then has to have the natural nuance of having already been living in that world.

Gives less leeway for exposition dumps without them being a fish out of water to have the world's workings explained to them.

Yeah, it's pretty boring. If the main character can't die, then there's no sense of urgency, even in situations that should be life-or-death. The other popular trope of the isekai genre, the "useless MC that is shocked and bewildered by everything" is just as boring, because they only have one go-to reaction to literally any situation. You can get around that saying "oh it's tongue-in-cheek, it's supposed to be a deconstruction of the fantasy genre, etc, etc" and that would be okay the first time, or the second time. The fact that it's so popular now really drives home 's point in that it's writing on easy mode; You don't have to worry about "what would the character do in X situation" because the answer is either "be shocked at something that is completely mundane in the fantasy world" or "die."

Pretty much what I'm getting at here Then Isekai gives them extra self insert bonuses which straight up fantasy doesn't.

Pretty much. I'm still mildly enjoying isekai fare these days so long as they keep me amused, but they are definitely getting lazier and lazier. But knowing Japan, we'll see at least another 5 years of this schlock before the next new fad hits.

>no re zero episode this week
hold me Sup Forums

I am waiting for the Isekai MC that ends all isekai MCs.

But who would want to self insert as some dude who suffers horrible deaths on a regular basis

Isn't he from that isekai about making pizza instead of going after the demonlord

Now that I look back, most final fantasy shit like that looks so goofy and plastic.

In Subaru's case? Not at all especially once you find out that his reswpawn isnt even his power and a malevolent force has been pulling the strings around it.

To be honest with you Al has a better respawn that Subaru as Al can control checkpoint which Subaru cannot. Then there is the fact that everytime Subaru respawns a timer gets counted down to the qorld being destroyed. As well as Subaru not being the actual Subaru but his concousness being transferred into another timeline to which where the other timelines continue which Subaru has to live with and is forced to watch by Echidna. Then there is the destruction of all the genuine moments and relatonships that he has cultivated when he respawns. Imagine if he respawned when during episode 18, that's bound to fuck someone up.

He is from the isekai the anime industry needs, but not the one it deserves.

Really it all comes down to how you execute the respawn mechanic. It can be compelling if you hit the right places but lose all sense of urgency and loss if not played properly.

It is, but creating a pussy that never uses it well is annoying too.

Though the one time he does ends up exploiting it doesnt go well for anyone involved with him.

That reminds me did saike update recently

yes, there was a new chapter a week or 2 ago.

I wonder, would A Princess of Mars count?

He's transported to a world of swords and magic so yes

That's one of the most annoying things about Barusu, he almost never uses his head until a mountain of deaths and terrible outcomes happen first. He makes some of the stupidest decisions. Then the author has him connect the most random-ass clues, hints, and assumptions together to successfully navigate whatever problem he's in.

I look at that and go "there's no way a normal person would be able to figure out most of this stuff without having to do a couple of dozen tries ending in death." It's kind of bullshit. There's a number of things I like about the show, but Barusu is not one of them.

It's in the Public Domain.

I wonder why nobody tries it.

Tries what?

Makes an adaptation of the Barsoom series?

The Isekai has loads of room for world building and other stuff yet all the authors follow the most generic stuff.

The only one that was god tier was Overlord because it was a whole new level to the others.

Because the show is shit.

Its had various comics and movies.

Think it finally got a jap print like a year ago.

Well I meant an anime series, but yeah.

Sauce?

I know right,I mean I don't blame him for not wanting to slit his own throat or jump of a cliff but if I was him I would look for ways to die painlessly so I could just use it to a point it doesn't even feel like I am dying just reseting.
I am pretty sure there is spell that can do that, just for spies who gets captured and the like.

That gimmick is what gives the show it's selling point.

Why are you consuming trash anyways?

Crap genre for sad teenagers.

I don't mind Isekai, stuff like 12 Kingdoms and Kanata Kara are great, I only hate it when they feature MMO elements, now THAT is the template.

I don't think they could make a good anime out of it. Just can't see it.

>Actually consuming trash that is Re:Zero

What did you expect?

No one mentions Drifters when this genre is criticized. I missed out because all people would talk about is the oppai-megane and trap.

Saike mata shitemo.
It's about a boy who becomes Shiro emiya through timeloop.

Guess the series.

>MC is transported/reincarnated into a fantasy world
>either becomes super powerful shortly after the series starts, or was already super powerful to begin with
>the strongest natives only have a fraction of the MC's power
>this isn't a problem though, because the MC is a good guy who never abuses his power intentionally
>quickly gains at least one love interest which quickly expands into a harem
>despite having zero romantic intentions for any of the girls, they all remain devoted to him forever
>harem includes mostly blatant stereotypes like the elf waifu or a flat chested tsundere who's main rival is a big breasted girl
>if there is an adventurer's guild, the MC always signs up and starts from the lowest rank while hiding his real power
>the female staff of the adventurer's guild always falls in love with him (but he will not notice or further the relationship)
>the series never explores how the MC got transported to another world till the very end of the series, or it is quickly glossed over with a "a god did it" explanation at the beginning
>the MC never encounters any difficulties with the local language or his out of place clothes
>any fantasy world currency that the MC already had before the start of the series is incredibly valuable because it is long lost legendary gold or something
>the fantasy world natives constantly freak out over how amazing the MC is but he is always humble and never exploits it to his advantage
>MC often gains a token male best friend who is there mainly to help the MC show off. He will also be forever alone because all the girls are lusting after the MC who shows zero interest in them.

Why didn't Subaru just constantly kill himself to get things right? He can always rape and pillage then respawn back to the appa guy. Its not like anything matters when respawning.

Re:Zero

>Isekai about MC wanting to be a pastry chef
>He's working to be a village head so he can plant and harvest things essential to him
>Does beekeeping, makes aqueducts
>Trains in spearmanship during downtime
>Has to go to main village for match with his brother to determine next head of the family
>Suddenly videogame mechanics as he loses and starts mulling over his father and brother having ranks and masteries that he didn't acquire

Yes it is its more stupid when he doesnt use it to his advantage and scum his way to being a ruler of a country.

At least Kazuma would have made it more interesting

I still think Mushoku Tensei ended perfectly

>repeat the same day/event until you get it right

Sounds annoying as hell, like repeatedly watching the same episode of a tv show you don't like.

protip : his mental/emotional state doesnt get reset

Why is rezero so shit?

Like any of that matter when you can rewind time he is just a moralfag pussy and you know it

Isekai aren't inherently bad, but they're rarely anything more than vapid and transparent wish-fulfillment fantasies.

I want an isekai where MC isnt an OP Deus ex Machina

15 year old me would have loved isekai. I don't want to sound like i am too good for in fact i really wanted to enjoy it because i am the neet who it panders to but i just get very bored when watching it.

There are loads of those. Use google some time.

A spider is fine too

>mental/emotional issues don't count

I bet you believe that PTSD can be cured just by manning up too.

New Gate, the currency was a dead give away. Deathmarch was a possibility but I don't see any other male characters.

protip : most of them aren't translated or aren't even in anime/manga format.

Except Subaru doesnt have PTSD he is just a pussy who never mans up

He has control over respawning so why the fuck would he not abuse it and give a shit about the world around him? That what Konosuba did and it worked.

It's the natural culmination of anime and pandering. Harems with a bland MC lets loser weebs insert into a fantasy where every girl was after their dick. Now isekai lets them isert into a fantasy where every girl is after their dick but they are also a warrior, savior, al important bland MC.

This of course doesn't apply to things like Konosuba.

>still no sibling incest isekai and not harem
Please fucking kill me

Because the MC is retarded and unlikable.

The other characters are also retarded and unlikable.

You didnt read the AU where he does do that right.

Because the VN is also shit. Nothing screams bad when the anime was adapting a VN.

Well there's this guy whose pet cockatiel reincarnated into a busty bombshell and isekai'd him into another world to be with him. No harem apparently.

>Because the VN is also shit
>Re:Zero
>VN
What did he mean by this

Gate but in 1938

What is this AU everyone keeps talking about? If you expect me to consume more of this trash then no thank you and keep to yourself

I know that one, and is dat goede?
Well, what I mean non-harem sibling incest isekai. There are sibling incest isekai, but it's harem and she's half-sister so well it's not my cup of tea. Hope she's full sister at least ;_;.

The author made a "what if" about subaru accepting echidna's proposal of abusing the fuck out of his respawn thing in exchange for her help. The whole thing looks like a bad end: the route actually.

Isekai peaked at Grimgar.

Its called my pet is a holy maiden if youre interested. Havent seen any full sibling isekai. Keep looking, you might find one.

>subaru doesn't have ptsd
>arc 2 literally shows him shivering in his room scared shitless

Eh, I actually like the premise well enough. It is nice that Barusu isn't super genre-savvy, people aren't just automatically assuming he's this amazing hero or whatever. The mystery of how he ended up there, and what the Witch is up to with him, etc, has me hooked enough to keep watching. Plus, the show is not some kind of fluffy, cutesy fantasy world much of the time; people die, often in gruesome, horrifying ways. Theres dark, evil shit that happens in the world that the MC can't just walk in and solve by virtue of being "The Hero," etc.

That said, I do recognize that overall it's not the best execution, and that these isekai LN/WN authors are generally pretty crappy writers, so I'm not expecting high-quality storytelling or literary prowess out of it.

Exactly, after the second arc with him dealing with Rem and Ram, I was expecting him to look into a more efficient, less painful way to off himself and put this power of his more in HIS control, which could help him reduce the trauma he gets from these anguishing deaths and fucked up drama. Nope, he just blunders along, fucking everything up, getting himself killed by the people he slights in awful ways. Come on bro, fucking LEARN something, and stop being such an idiotic tool.

>only abuses his power when he literally makes a deal with one of the seven greatest evils
Why can't he just abuse his power without making a deal with what basically is a devil

>scared shitless
>and then he gets over it the next day

Took him a week and a suicide to get better

Except even after the suicide cliff jump he was still scared shitless, vomiting on himself, and only calmed down after Emilia let him cry it out to her.

I thought the idea of him having to cope with losing the connections and moments he's had with others would've been really interesting, but it doesn't seem like that was ever touched upon more than once.

He's an idiot like that and he needs help.

It's nothing but the battle harem genre in a different setting.

It was the entire focus of arc 2 actually but Whitefox decided the mabeast battle was more important. It also gets constantly touched upon in arcs 3 and forward but again they decided to gut that psycholigical aspect of Re:Zero in favour of the whale battle.

is re zero a masterpiece?

But what if there is no battle or harem?

Well you arent missing out on anything because the novels are absolute shit as well.

Then there's nobody watching it.

post good isekai

>Expecting anything from a shit MC

Well there is your problem

Its good, but i cant say that "x series is a masterpiece" until its finished, some series have a great start, but shit end and others have a shit start, but a great end

Doesn't have harem.

That's just classic wanking over how good Japanese cuisine is.

This is probably the most irritating aspect he could have just simply killed himself on many occasions when he fucked up like on episode 13 or some shit considering death shouldnt really matter to him

But plenty of people watched Re:Zero.

What are the maids the loli the elf and Crusch? What are you fucking delusional?

its less that and more wanking over fresh commercialized produce in fantasy setting. Regardless, Im more acceptable of wanking over food porn than the japanese military.

Nothing has told him that he can die infinitely.

>Maids

Rem loves Subaru. Ram doesn't.

>Elf

Doesn't love Subaru.

>Crusch

Eat shit you fucker.

So... we are getting a second season, right? The twitter revealed the white rabbit very recently, suggesting that they're still keeping the series going. Am I right?

Only Rem and Emilia have romantic feelings for Subaru, Ram like the clown, the loli is more like daughter-father relationship and Crusch is more Trust/friendship

What's the name of the one where a girl gets summoned to another world into a noble family (?), starts cooking all sorts of shit her family have never heard of? desu something

Nobunaga no Chef
