A character rarely, if ever, ruins a show for me. Mostly because I watch the show from an outside perspective and can see the contribution that the character makes to the story despite not liking him in a personal way.
However, when it comes to video games, character do ruin games for me, because I have to play as the fucking guy. Makoto Naegi from Dangaronpa is a good example of a character that almost ruined a game that I actually liked.
