SS Sturmbannführer Eberhard Heder - one of the last surviving Knight Cross bearers of the Waffen SS passed away last week in Munich. He was 99.
Eberhard Heder volunteered for the Waffen SS on November 1, 1937 and joined NSDAP the same year. He attended the Junker School Braunschweig in 1939. With the 5th SS pioneer Batallion SS Division Wiking he participated in the Russian campaign and acquired until January 1942, the Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd class. In March 1943, he was commander of the Estonian SS volunteer tank grenadier battalion Narva, the German Cross in Gold for his services during the battles over Kharkov, Cherkasy and Kovel. The Knight's Cross was awarded to Heder on 18 November 1944 as commander of the 5th SS Pioneer Battalion. He closed a gap in the front north of Warsaw with a hastily assembled infantry company and held them for three days against an enemy charging with far superior forces. This prevented the breakthrough of the Red Army on the Vistula. After the war, Heder was in the Bundeswehr, most recently in the rank of Colonel.
