Mary is a mostly independent actor in the story so I don't know if she can be considered like Watson. She is also a fairly above average gambler that was even invited to be in the student council even if with ulterior motives from the president, while MC being a completely average person thrown in that school.
I only read first chapter, but it's likely that she betrayed Mary at some point, lost and disappeared. Or she lost and Mary couldn't save her or didn't think it was worth the risk. But I'd assume that this is the climax of the spin-off.
