The Persians conquered Afghanistan every time they tried bar the Qajar Dynasty, Alexander conquered it and continued his conquests, the Mongols invaded and butchered them, the British only failed in the first Anglo-Afghan War, in the Second they conquered the entirety of the kingdom, turning them into a vassal, and did the same after the Third (when they invaded).
The Soviets occupied almost every major city, but became worn out due to guerilla tactics, same way the US did in regards to Vietnam, and, currently in Afghanistan.
