I get that, what I don't understand is how that relates to electing politicians on a minority of votes against the will of the general populous.

Senators is a good example as to why this polling system works though.

We're doing it as if each series picked their champion and are battling it out for best girl.

Also, consider how long of a poll, or how complex it would be to vote best girl out of all the characters in the season. This really narrows down the selection to something more reasonable.

But we already had polls with all of the girls. OP could have just said to pick one from any of the lists and we wouldn't have this weird show-splitting thing.

And it's not like the selection needs to be narrowed down. Everyone already knows who they want to vote for, you don't need to look through a list to figure out who your favorite girl is.
