It is very likely that the anime ruined all his efforts for the manga because they doesn't need to try anymore with the plot at that time. His art grew to be more simplistic and lacked the amazing details of the early chapters (like the dream pages) and at some point he just stopped caring about the series, even though he had to drag everyone into his abyss by not making the characters kiss.
It really is a shame because I actually thought he was a great romance writer with a clever premise from watching the anime and early manga chapters, only to disappointly find out he's not.

I also remembered watching the teaser pv to the last ep and the dialogue made it sound like Urabe was breaking up with him. I was utterly rused when the actual last episode was just "nothing happened"
