India didn't exist as a concept until the British introduced the idea as part of their administration of the entire subcontinent. Only after smashing all the petty Princes and rulers and making a flat even administration did India finally gel as more than various tribes under this or that king. After that the British started squashing terrible religious practices and customs that were destructive. Unfortunate for India they never managed to abolish the caste system and that will continue to fracture society forever.
