I bike through Venice beach at least once a week.While there are a ton of filthy hobos, it's nowhere near as disgusting or dangerous as downtown LA or any number of other shitholes in LA. It's a tourist attraction; people come to look at the freaks. Because the beach houses around the freaks cost $5M+ they don't let things get out of hand. I don't suppose I'd want to walk alone there at night though.
No expert, but I'd have to agree. After 30 mins in San Francisco I was having to field questions from my 6 year old daughter about the men dressed like women and faggots kissing pretty much everywhere you looked.
Enjoyed Yosemite and a few other areas in California (didn't make it further north than Sacramento), but was disappointed overall.

Venice was the place to be homeless in the 90s. When I say homeless I don't mean a bum. Tons of pro skaters lived there, just hang out smoke weed for free, skate all day, cheap beers then go to bed on the beach, take a shower in the public showers in the morning do it all over again. Can live off like $5 a day. Never knew who you were going to meet. This was before it was filled with bums and minorities. Basically living in paradise for free, living life to the fullest.
