My Dad left school and joined The Communist Party Of Great Britain aged 14 in 1934 because he grew up in grinding poverty in Newcastle (his family actually could not afford shoes and wore clogs) during an economic depression, and he could see no other solution to the problem.
He was in the Merchant Navy during the war then afterwards in the late 1940s he worked briefly for The Gas Board because it had been nationalised like he believed that all industry should be, but he quickly left disillusioned because everyone else only wanted to work there because they thought that they couldn't be fired. He was a real teetotal puritan, so he went to work for himself.
Although we only discussed it once I think that he was one of the many British communists who were disillusioned by the Russian invasion of Hungary in 1956. It was definitely a touchy subject.
By the time I arrived in 1958 he had become a successful self-made businessman and so I was raised in middle class affluence, in the sixties. A very different upbringing to my Dad (and my Mum).
In 1979 we actually visited Russia and he truly expected to find a workers' paradise, hidden from our own working class by the lying, right-wing press. I remember the look on his face the first time he saw an old woman, looked at least 60, peasant's head scarf and everything, on her knees, on her own, replacing street cobble stones by hand. Russia was a dump. Young men fresh out of national service clustered round tourist areas offering their medals to us in return for jeans, or even just chewing gum.
He used to say that only Communism could save us, but that people just weren't ready for it. It would have worked if everyone was like him.
