Don't underestimate the ability of people to rationalize what they see. The Apostles themselves say "Who is this guy? How is he doing this" when they see Jesus perform miracles with their own eyes. You do need some measure of faith to accept what you see as God speaking to you and not rationalize it away as hallucinations or delusions. Doubting Thomas had to touch Jesus wound before he'd believe he'd risen. There was plenty of skepticism going around, even in those days.
