This is true to some extent, however, the mechanisation would have to be accompanied by reduction of population as well. There will always be jobs for people to do, if you reduce their hours and there isn't too many people you're not actually just handing out shit. It is documented as well that people are happier overall if they work less than 40 hours a week but still have a job, just are not ran into the ground.
