Was there ever even a vote in the first place to join the EU? Everytime they try to expand power with some treaty and put it to a public vote, the people say no and then they do it anyway regardless.

Honestly this whole referendum thing just underscores for me how idiotic the whole idea of direct democracy is. If 'The People' can supposedly will an action, even a massively disruptive one, by simple majority, then magically un-will it at any time later through another head count, then what kind of legitimacy or even simple legislative practicality has the process? Maybe we should do one referendum per week on the same question for a year and then take the mean of the results? Or should we have an online database where people can submit their own referenda on any subject that immediately becomes binding upon conclusion? I'd rather live under any tyrant just so long as he has some consistent idea about what to do with the nation.
Every democracy will always, over time, decay into corrupt politicians pandering to the 51% to screw over the other 49%. Whatever they want done, they will get done, by bundling it together with whatever else will get them that single vote they need to be 50% + 1.
