That's because they're just huge archetypes. You've got the asshole for the bad boy appeal, opposed to the overly nice guy. Same reason you've got the cute moeblob opposed to the abrasive tsundere in shounen manga.
Honestly it's pretty boring, but some shoujo mangaka go so far to make the main guy an asshole it becomes comedic.
