If you take in consideration most of New-Brunswick and Quebec can speak French, you have more than a quarter already. Then you have some French pockets in the plains, a third doesn't surprise me at all. But I'm sure some people said they could hold a conversation, but are, in fact, utterly trash.

Benefit of being the majority, frog. There are certain jobs that do require bilingualism such as certain police jobs and military officers. English is also much more applicable to interactions with people from other countries in my opinion.

I live in Montreal and can't speak French. We had to take French as a core subject and I went to an English school in the English Core program. I had a friend who lived in Toronto and he said French was for an hour once a week or something like that.

I guess it's the nature of being in the 'New World'. I have no connection to the French or their language. I'm more interested in languages my bloodline comes from. So for my mothers side that would be German and for my father that would be Croatian. I have more interest, personally, in learning those if and when I can.

Did you know it's illegal here to ask for someone to know English to hire them unless you can prove beyond doubt they will need English as a skill set (I.E call center for the whole country). Also, the workplace must be fully French. Paradoxically, as I've said, we're forced to learned English. I remember my pre-university course had 2-3 English classes, and for the final one I had to speak for 10 minutes, write a whole thesis and read a book to later answer questions about it. While it's fairly simple, if I had failed to do so, I wouldn't have gotten my diploma, which would have pretended me from getting a degree, and that English course is mandatory in every single program. You could literally go for a French literature career path (kek I know) and have to learn English to do so. I'm not complaining about the fact you have the benefits of the majority, as you've stated, but rather than you're not forced to learn someone's else language, when it's useless in our day to day lives. I could live my whole life and have a comfortable income without speaking a word of English, but as with any skill, I'd rather have it than not.
