Why is such a significant part of our culture/core values consist of being not American? Everywhere from shitty opinion pieces to news articles to Canadian textbooks explicitly or implicitly state that Canada is nothing like America and that we are better. Conversations with other people frequently enter into the territory of "those fucking retard backwards Americans". Hell, Canada's own principle of multiculturalism being a tossed salad is almost certainly going to be compared with the USA's melting pot in particular whenever it is brought up.
There is no doubt that Canada's culture and way of living is so similar to American culture that you could say that it is an extension of it with slight alterations. There are people who are excessively proud of being "Canadian" to the point of arrogance as well. Yet, little of this arrogance is generalized. Canadians seldom say that they are far superior to China, France, Kenya, Russia, Afghanistan, or any other country. No, whenever Canadians say they are better than another country, it is almost always the US. How did it become this way?
Now, the idea that we're 'not americans' goes back a lot further. We're descended from the loyalists that specifically rejected the USA. We were both Anglos, separated along political lines. Our societies were parallels and now we're in the American sphere of influence since the fall of the British Empire so we've lost most of the legitimate differences between each other.
It's kind of funny, we were once the traditionalist conservatives while the Americans were the revolutionary liberals.

Most of our culture was stripped away by the Trudeau dynasty. We're not really loyalists anymore, there's not a clear common culture even among Anglos, 'old stock' Canadians are a disenfranchised minority, our own leader calls us a 'post-national state', so we're left with... not being American. It's a sad state of affairs.
Everything's sort of come full circle. When the loyalists departed north they left a people who were identical to them other then bitter political differences. Then our societies developed separately, then Trudeau Sr. began the dismantling of our culture, and now our leftists look south and the only difference between us now is once again political.

Even if I leave Toronto and go hunting or hiking up in north Ontario there is the "oh it's just the big city, we don't really care up here" attitude. There is little concept that giving these immigrants votes will turn the country into a shithole for decades to come. Importing 300,000 a year from shithole countries doesn't even include secondary migration / sponsorship.
We have a small team of Engineers here. Two of them are young Pajeets. Both had arraigned marriages from India within the last year. Both of them are now sponsoring their "wives" to come and live in Canada. The Pajeet engineers are as worthless as a bag of shit - how they got recognised to Canadian terms is beyond me. How is this better? We've increased our population over a third from 1980 (24.5 million) to 2010 (34 million), and it's still going up. The amount of jobs hasn't increased and yet we're still taking in more.
