Does 4k anime make sense?

No.

Most TV animation is broadcasted at 720p, then reescalated for the blurays. All restorations thus far are 1080p.

4k will start being kinda relevant 7-10 years from now.

isn;t gundam thunderbolt going to have a 4k release?

Your Name is getting a 4K BD release.

4k res for filmed real life scenery porn that you can actually spot a guy behind the window glass among thousands or close up shot of a nipple that you can see the hair and pores, yes.

4k res anime that are just upscale filled with nothing but artifacts, no.

Upscaled from 1080p, right? Does it make any difference?

no, BD is not upscaled from TV version

this is one of many examples

Depends how it was produced and how much effort they're putting in. If it was produced at 1080p they can't do anything but upscale unless they remake the whole thing. If it was produced in a scaleable fashion then you could quite easily get more detail. Like 1080p versions of old shows where they've reimaged the cels at higher resolution.

How would you even watch it?
As far as I know there aren't any bluray drives that play 4k BDs.
I'm not going to waste money on a bluray player and a 4k TV. They're entirely worthless to own.

anime isn’t even mastered in 1080p let alone fucking 4K

Is this bait? The BD is clearly remastered for home video release like so many BDs are these days. 720p doesn't remove shading and completely change the dynamic of someone's eyebrows and eyes.

4K would make sense for highly detailed pre-digital movies. Lower quality pre-digital stuff wouldn't be worth it and anything post digital would have to at least be mastered in 4K or higher to even be a contender.

In a decade, when automated software can reliably do the work of 100 nip inbetweeners and 250 other SEA-inbetweeners so that a crew of 5 key animators can churn out one episode for 20 different anime shows every week, perhaps then 4k (or whatever the next useless super-resolution will be sold) will become mainstream.

This, word on the street is that Japan's going to skip straight to 8K and 4K will just be the next 720p.

>Most TV animation is broadcasted at 720p
Except it isn't.

Not possible for most studios since they can't even fucking animate cgi past 4 frames a second

2k for heavily digital based shows may be a thing though

>4K would make sense for highly detailed pre-digital movies
I see. Capturing the original cells at new and higher resolutions, right?

Yeah, but even then it would only really be worth it for a small percentage of movies.

>Is there 4k resolution anime?
There are, but some is you'll never get able to watch.

Most studios still can't even into 1080p.

>take photograph of landscape
>run through some filters
>use as background
Should scale to 4k just fine.

>paint background in watercolors
>spend 3 seconds panning over it
>scan painting at 4k
ditto

Also think of how much trippier colors can get with the wider color gamut of HDR.
The most difficult part is drawing character art or anything that moves in higher detail.

>Does 4k anime make sense?
Don't think so. Anything 4k, 8k, etc makes little sense except for VR.

of course there is and of course it makes sense

Yes it does, clearly broadcast versions are just BD versions with the graphics settings turned down. Are you stupid?
