When people think of California they imagine Wine Country, and Hollywood, and Silicon Valley without realizing those locales in the imagination they conjure up is not life for most people. The one good thing California has going for it is to stoke the imaginations and the aspirations of people around the world. Because of this the state of California is able to vacuum up Talent and capable individuals in ways that other states cannot.
Compare this with States across the South who are fucked over by their demographics. A lot of these Southern States could easily be thought of as Detroit-gone-statewide. If not for their demographics they would rank much higher and be much cooler places.
