So how do anons like that this (pic related) will be the first anime ever on 4K Bluray home video. Is it time to upgrade out toasters and get 4K display?

Singapore likes it so much that some stores are openly selling counterfeits.

Was it a mistake?

Too bad it's a 1080p upscale, but it might be a sign of things to come. At least movies done on 35mm and scanned into 4k make sense currently.

>richest nation on SEA
>selling counterfeits

Sasuga SEA.

I'm currently in this thread on a 55" 4k TV. If it wasn't $120 with no subtitles in English I would consider it.

then there's literally no point

Same, we will have to wait for the BDrip then.

They cut the bottom away because they were using those sample screening disc from funimation

>Too bad it's a 1080p upscale

source pls

>but the 1st 4k anime was supposed to be GOTHICCMEIDO
>Nuuuuuuuuuoooooooooo

>no subtitles in English

There are subtitles user.

>not paying 120 quarter pounders for 4k spit sake action
Pleb senpai

Might have to reconsider then. Shipping usually is about $45 and at $105.40 for today's exchange rate looking at about $150.00 when I can wait for a localizer to start selling it with some shit dub for a third of the price. How motivated should I be?

Where can I download this shit in 4k?

>when I can wait for a localizer

you gotta wait 730 days then

There are English subs and its only ~$50 if you dont get all the extra shit you dont need.

That seems oddly specific.

For 4k or 1080p?

>730 days
for what purpose

>tfw we'll soon get high-qual Mitsuha reaction faces

SOON

No Gundam Thunderbolt is native 4k on blu ray

Will we still get this gem?

japos don't want domestic and international home video (bluray) release to happen at the same time because the risk of "reverse importation".

So 730 days is right around the ballpark.

way late op already an anime film
no one cares about that flick

>Where can I download this shit in 4k?

Get a 4K TV first. OLED TVs are now affordable.

Then upgrade your toaster and video player according to Daiz's specifications.

does it come with ENG subs?

Maybe.

I preordered yesterday and Amazon still had the film strip bookmarks in stock. Wonder when they'll sell out.

>mfw

How are they continually allowed to get away with jewing the fuck out of their home market again?

>4k upscale
Kek

Feels great man.

Just preordered the collector's edition on amazon, they've still got it for now

at least its got HDR treatment

For the wealthier anons, is OLED worth the dollarydoos? Looking at a new TV and the auto-brightness limiter seems like it would be pretty annoying for chinese cartoons.

>Looking at a new TV and the auto-brightness limiter seems like it would be pretty annoying for chinese cartoons.

ABL limiter for OLEDs only kick in if you go above 35 ft/L (or 120 cd/m^2), and that is already plenty bright.

Which version of the blu ray should I buy? I'm always indecisive on the bonuses from the different retailers.

And do all the versions include English subs?

Buy all of them, user. Buy Mitsuha's movie!

>OLED worth the dollarydoos

It is the only self light-emitting display at a subpixel level (RGB) on the market

So that's a yes.

So is it an upscale or not? Went and preordered the collectors edition, would be great if it was native. Also, are they going to be using funi's subs as-is, typo's, lack of type-setting, and aliased out-the-ass fonts and all? Worried that they might actually get their shit together and try and fix them when they do their own release. If they do, and it's 4k as well, might be a better pickup.

Yes, all versions have English subs. One thing to note is that we don't know if the extra content on the bonus disks from the limited editions are subbed.

I'll still get it for the fancy cover and bookmarks though.

>the first anime ever on 4K Bluray home video
I thought that was Gundam Thunderbolt?

rightstufanime.com/Mobile-Suit-Gundam-Thunderbolt-ULTRA-HD-Blu-ray

I really do hope that they redo the subs. There were a couple of obvious typos, as well as a few scenes where they could've phrased things better.

When I streamed it I saw the pirated screening version. Makes me wonder how much of the movie I actually missed?

Manga was better.

>theatrical July 2016
>blu-ray September 2017
That's a ridiculous home video wait.

So why does the village god/protector/whatever erase the diary entries off of Taki's phone? I got the impression it was reaching out through time and space to save the villagers from the disaster but that only ends up making things more difficult.

>"Mitsuha"
>Subs: "Onee-chan"
AAAAAAAAAAAGH why do they do this.

>pushed back because of the critical theatrical reception

I'm ok with this. More money - more encouragement for the medium, industry and genre.

Probably because it was in theaters so long.

Shit, there are STILL local showtimes listed.

It's not really a plot hole, but it isn't ever explained. Even Shinkai said that he didn't have an explanation in mind for the body swapping, since he thinks it doesn't matter why it happened.

Same here, I guess, but it could have to do with the whole underworld "leave your most precious things behind." Notice that the only entries deleted are the Mitsuha ones.

Still, it was kind of an awkward moment I think they could've written better.

I think it had to do with the fading connection between them. Before he gave realized the importance of the cords, he was trying to rationalize the entire situation. When he found out everyone died, he began doubting everything that ever happened. The same way that the marker writings on their hands came and went at the end, the entries were marks left on Taki by direct interaction with Mitsuha.

The markers never disappeared though, neither on Taki or on Mitusha.

I guess that works. It's just the one thing I noticed that wasn't really explained.

It's nice reading the things Shinkai has said about the movie, he's a very humble guy.

>150.00
...user I have it preordered on amazon jp for 9,900 yen and that includes shipping

>first anime ever on 4K Bluray home video.

You're missing out on fuck tons of actual scenery porn.

Why does everyone think this movie is so great?

Honestly it was a pretty fucking generic YA story. Would have been way better if it spent more time on them living eachothers lives, then realizing in the end, that she's and everyone he's made friends with in that life, are fucking dead and there is nothing he can do about it.

That would have put it more in line with his earlier depressing work like Voices and 5cm.

This says nothing about it being MASTERED in NATIVE 4k. Face it, it's the most likely option, although the 4k BD will look nicer because of the bitrate.

Doesnt say it isnt either.

Extremely unlikely, the costs of doing this at four times the pixel resolution and everyone having upgraded PCs/monitors should tell you what the native resolution is. One day user, but not this day.

Diminishing returns is a helluva drug.
The upgrade from 720 to 1080 is already completely unnoticeable from more then 5 feet away.
4K is double the pixels for triple the price and it's damn near indistinguishable from "2K"

It's going to be a loooooong time before the expense of 4K is small enough as to be justified by it's marginal improvement.

looking forward to the movie though

Youre just spouting words without offering any evidence. I can do the same thing too. You love to suck cocks.

>expense of 4K

a good 4K tv is cheap as hell. Sorry you are too much of a poorfag to afford one

No evidence? When has mastering any anime at 4k natively been a thing that any studio has done? Do you also realize the costs of upgrading to this are not trivial? Do you also know how many 4k BDs are merely upscaled content? It's time to stop being childishly optimistic and enter the realm of adult cynicism.

He's talking about the cost of production at 4k, not the cost of a TV, DUH.

No matter what you're paying hundreds more than you would for a simalrly sized 1080p TV/monitor for an unnoticeable difference.

You can call me a poorfag for not buying your $10 fiji water but I'm just going to keep drinking the one that cheaper and damn near the same in every noticeable way.

It's amazing how long it still takes for japanese movies to be released on blu ray.

>He's talking about the cost of production at 4k, not the cost of a TV, DUH
Both actually.
Cost of a TV is higher because the cost of production is higher.

>hundreds more

Now I know you are retarded.

Why does everyone think tragedy is somehow innately deeper? Some of the most thoughtful movies and books ever made, things like Wild Strawberries and Ulysses and the Aneid - they all have happy endings. Sadness not any more indicative of depth than the most saccharine shit imaginable, yet somehow there's this attitude that suffering makes a story wiser. And that's just edgy bullcrap.

To label KNNW as a generic YA story is to ignore layers and layers of subtext, and even the liminal. This is probably Shinkai's most personal film in 10 years, and it's a direct rejection of the 5cm/s philosophy. The Earthquake bits have been discussed to hell and back, but the fact is that Shinkai wholeheartedly believes that his old attitude was wrong. And this new philosophy pervades all of the movie. From the visual design, the direction, and even the music (even if it was pretty dumb j-pop), every piece fits together to push an idea forward. Not like Kotonoha, or Kodomo.

And plenty has to be said for how visually stunning it is. I mean, Shinkai is a fantastic director and editor, but a terrible, terrible animator. I always thought that despite people praising 5cm/s, it still looked like garbage. Individual frames look nice but the characters aren't emotive. They look like robots half the time. Bringing on Ando and Tanaka let Shinkai focus on the cinematography, while the AD's handled the details of emotion. That Mitsuha crying scene would have been impossible in any older Shinkai film.

And add on top of that impressive visual continuity and powerful theming, and you've got the best Shinkai film ever. Even if you think 5cm/s is more realistic or resonant to a certain lifestyle, there's no denying that KNNW is better produced, better written, and conveys a more original message, and more skillfully too.

I'd rank this up there with my top Anime films of all time, with Omoide Poroporo, Honey Mayo, and Patlabor 2. Miyazaki wishes he could make something as good.

I pre-ordered on Ami-ami, did I fuck up?

Also how would you go on about taking screenshots from the BD?
Can you even play 4k Blu-ray disks on a desktop?

Are blu rays of ancient anime just upscales? Why even get them?

Blu rays of anime produced with cell animation (90s and before) are usually remasters. Cell anime can be upscaled if the studio lost the film masters.

Digital anime produced only in 480p from the early to middle 2000s are usually upscales.

>Can you even play 4k Blu-ray disks on a desktop?

of course idiot. you need a 4k monitor
