I've a friend who is in generally against immigrants and feminism etc, but gets more passionate about repealing the 8th each time we talk about it, recently he sent me a video about some woman complaining about the abuse people get on twitter for supporting abortion, I found the video fairly funny but it turns out he thought it was a solid argument for repealing the 8th. And this lad used to be casually racist and indifferent towards politics. The mainstream media still controls the majority of the Irish population unfortunately.

Fianna Fáil advocating for legal abortion is not the Death Warrant as many seem to think, they are in a very delicate position between appealing to their older voters and appealing to their younger voters. A lack of the former means losing votes to FG, a lack of the latter means losing votes to SF.
Pic related is RedC (who actually had the most inaccurate predictions in 2016. I wanted the B&A or Ipsos polls from the summer, however they seem to be gone now.) Pic related tells a larger story - the eventual end of Civil War politics, and the adoption of the typical Left-Right politics you see in the rest of Western Europe.
The statistics suggest that those in their 40s and younger have high support for Sinn Féin. These same statistics suggest that those in their 50s and older are still engaged in the Civil War divide of FF and FG.
As per this generational divide, the Civil War issue will die out in roughly 30 years (which, incidentally, may be when a 32 County Republic begins fruition). The middle-aged have decided the future already.
When I made this post, I wasn't pulling it out of my ass, I wasn't bullshitting. When re-unification occurs, the elections will mainly be a contest of SF vs FG, just like all other Western European countries.
FF, in it's current state, is useless in the long-term. They will likely edge slightly to the left in each election cycle and will most likely end up adopting policies similar to the SPD and adopting the role that Labour used to occupy. This is their only chance of long-term survival.

Sinn Féin is a Republican Socialist party, and thus has two main camps - the Repulicans and the Socialists. Some members are very Republican whilst not very Socialist, many members are Socialist whilst not very Republican. Gerry was a very good Leader as he was both.
Mary Lou is firmly in the Republican camp. The reason she initially joined FF is because SF were not particularly active in Dublin at the time. She was in FF for about 6 months before making the change.

Yes. This is one of the main reasons why I decided not to join them. They have been inching further to the centre for 20 years, and there is a worry that they will go the way of Labour. Gerry himself doled out anti-Capitalist sentiment in the late 90s, though you'd never hear him share such sentiments today.
However, I do not feel like this is too much of a problem. If SF move further to the centre, A-PBP are there to suck up their far-left votes in Urban constituencies. This has already hurt them, if they move further to the centre they will lose more seats to S-PBP.
The system has been set up very delicately, if SF become Labour 2.0 they will die.
