Even then they fucked up almost everything against muslims, except the reconquista and conquest of Sicily. Sure, they established crusader states in Middle East, but imported their old ethnical and dynastic quarrels with them, and started to ally with saracens to fight other crusader states and their saracen allies.
The most successfull crusades were fought against christian heretics and white European pagans.

Of the abrahamitic cults, a warrior inclined one like Islam in the hands of the Germanics and with Greco-Roman socio-philosophical structure would have been optimal, instead we've got the meek cult of the crucified carpenter to start with and to mold into something alright like traditional Catholicism.
