A massive forest fire rages uncontrolled at the Torres del Paine National Park in the Patagonian steppe in southern Chile on December 31, 2011.
Chilean firefighters on Saturday tried to contain the massive wildfire that has ravaged tens of thousands of acres of pristine Patagonia and forced authorities to close the popular national park.
The fires in the regions of Magallanes, Bio Bio and Maule have claimed one life — an elderly man who refused warnings to leave his home — according to the Associated Press, and burned about 90 square miles of forest.
Chilean authorities, meantime, released Rotem Singer, the 23-year-old Israeli tourist suspected of causing the Torres del Paine fire.
According to the AP, Singer’s traveling companions said he set fire to toilet paper after going to the bathroom, and then failed to put it out completely.
But Haaretz reported that Singer admitted he had lit a bonfire in an area of the Torres del Paine park where such fires are prohibited.
The paper added that as Singer was led to the courtroom, onlookers shouted “filthy Jew.”

An Israeli backpacker has accepted a deal to pay £6,300 compensation to a Chilean environmental group after he was arrested for causing a devastating forest fire.
Rotem Singer, 23, was arrested at the start of January in connection with a forest fire at the Torres de Paine National Park, in southern Chile. The blaze caused severe damage to wildlife in the area.
No mention of the 100 or so homes which were burned up, or the death of at least one person who perished in the fire.

Israeli army declares Nabi Saleh, home to Tamimi family, closed military zone
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — The Israeli army declared the central occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh — home to imprisoned teenage activist Ahed al-Tamimi — a closed military zone on Saturday, closing off all entrances and exits.
Official Palestinian Authority (PA)-owned Wafa news agency reported that that Israeli forces set up barriers on the main road that leads to Nabi Saleh and prevented Palestinians, including journalists, from entering the village.
Wafa quoted Bilal al-Tamimi, the father of 16-year-old Ahed who was detained by Israeli forces last month over a video of her slapping and kicking an Israeli soldier, as saying that soldiers are preventing non-residents from entering the village.
However, Wafa reported that some Palestinians were able to enter by taking alternative yet longer routes to participate in a protest in the village. While Wafa said that the closure was enforced to prevent people from accessing the protest, some have speculated that the closure was taken as a punitive measure against the residents of Nabi Saleh, specifically the Tamimi family.
Since Ahed’s arrest, her cousin Nour was arrested — she was recently released — her mother Nariman and her aunt were detained, and recently one of her cousins was detained in an overnight raid.
Over a week ago, Ahed’s distant cousin Musaab al-Tamimi, from Nabi Saleh’s sister village of Deir Nitham, was shot and killed by Israeli forces.
The Tamimi family of Nabi Saleh is well known internationally for their activism against the Israeli occupation, which maintains a heavy, near-constant presence in their village.

Haaretz: This slap didn’t lead the nightly news. This slap, which landed on the cheek of a Nahal soldier in Hebron, did not lead to an indictment.
The assailant, who slapped a soldier who was trying to stop her from throwing stones, was taken in for questioning but released on bail the same day and allowed to return home.
Prior to this incident, she had been convicted five times — for throwing rocks, for assaulting a police officer and for disorderly conduct, but was not jailed even once.
In one instance, she was sentenced to probation, and in the rest to a month of community service and practically a token fine, as compensation to the injured parties.
The accused systematically failed to heed summonses for questioning or for legal proceedings, but soldiers did not come to drag her out of bed in the middle of the night, nor were any of her relatives arrested.
Aside from a brief report by Chaim Levinson about the incident, on July 2, 2010, there were hardly any repercussions to the slap and scratches inflicted by Yifat Alkobi on the face of a soldier who caught her hurling rocks a Palestinians.

Russia Insider, an English language publication with a crankish history of publishing nonsense and propaganda, published the manifesto, which contained a comprehensive litany of the most vile accusations against Jews dating back more than one hundred years.
“The unreasonable hostility towards Putin’s Russia, particularly coming from the US and the UK, is very much a Jewish phenomenon, and has been for centuries” the essay stipulated. It contains hundreds more sentences like that in a fourteen point manifesto which seems to have been ripped straight out of the 1930s.
