Makes sense. Males are cheap. If a healthy woman may give birth to four to nine children or so, and she survives to be able to confer advantageous conditions, her genes will propagate very well. Males didn't have this mechanism acting upon them because a man's place as protector and provider is much easier for family and extended networks if he dies. A man need merely sire and his job his done.. and as we all know, one man can sire many children in a VERY short space of time, whilst women giving an heir measure the space in years in practice, months in theory.

Where do they find the old hags for these studies? My anecdotal evidence says that women tend to drop dead 10-20 years younger than men because they get cancer or commit suicide. If it's in care homes where they are on life support then I can see why women might last longer in that circumstance. Men tend not to put up with having to stay immobile 20hrs a day and have a nurse help them shit.
These studies always have like 1000 total participants that have been pre-screened so you get all the old men who smoke and drink heavily and the old women who have sat on their ass all their lives yet the old men die like 1-2 years younger than the old women.
