American physician Edmund Pribitkin described Melbourne as a ‘magical city’, despite having titanium plates inserted into his face after he was allegedly severely bashed and robbed by a group of teenagers as he left the Australia Open last week. Dr Pribitkin was on his way back to his hotel with his teenage son Edik, 17, on Wednesday night, when they were allegedly attacked near the Queen Victoria Gardens.
The teenagers allegedly asked the pair for cigarettes before they began punching and kicking them. “My face was broken into pieces and separated from my skull,” Dr Pribitkin told Channel Nine.
Edik said the offenders did anything “from hitting me in the head, kicking and trying to pull me to the ground.” “At first they demanded cigarettes, but then they proceeded to ask for our belongings and then after trying to escape, we just got assaulted and hit," he said. “I landed on the ground on my left side and then I was assaulted at that point and then I blacked out.”
Dr Pribitkin suffered serious head injuries and was put in an induced coma while Edik suffered a broken nose and concussion. Dr Pribitkin, who spent four days recovering in The Alfred last week, thanked police and first responders. “My thanks and heart goes out to them, they put their lives on the line literally every day for us," the Pennsylvania father said. “This is a random act, it can happen anywhere in the world. It is a magical city you have some of the friendliest folks on earth here. We’ll be back, we’ll certainly be back, it’s thumbs up to that.”
