How trivial and understated it is makes it believable. In real life things aren't grandiose or dramatic, things just happen as part of everday life. If Okabe had discovered time tarvel as a giant portal that ripped through space in his living room, it'd feel like a Hollywood movie. The fact that he just discovers it by hooking his microwave up in a weird way makes it feel down to earth and believable.
