Kino

It'd be smarter to ask /m/, honestly OP. But I agree with

Typical Oshii, making all of the characters sullen and down-trodden at the expense of characterization. Nao doesn't resemble the TV or the OVA character at all.

The funny thing about the third 'Patlabor' movie is that I had no idea Oshii didn't direct it until it was over. Talk about a style that's easily aped. It wasn't that bad either.

>Nao

U are kidding right? The third movie was dogshit.

>U
It was alright.

Don't know how I made that typo. But still, Oshii clearly just wants to make every movie Ghost in the Shell.

Is there a correct order to watch Patlabor or do you just go with good ol release order?

>or the OVA character
You do know the OVAs were directed by Oshii, as well right?

Theirs defiantly a change in mood from the fun of the show and OVA's but they're really good. I borrowed the books that came with the special edition from a friend and it is interesting watching them knowing what Oshii was trying to do in the movies. I think the first one is the best overall since he was going for an interesting angle of emphasizing the effects the antagonist had on the world rather than his actual presence, focusing more on the breeze than the fan if you will. Two is still good but it's really political with Oshii just railing against the current (at the time) self defense clause Japan was forced to stick to.

Which makes it even more jarring when Noa is all "I'm not really a fan of patlabor, I'm not a kid anymore, wahhhh"

OVAs > Movies > TV series

I'd recommend the manga FIRST too, but there's no complete english scanlation, so too bad.

/m/ is shit though
It's sad that character was developed in a way you didn't like, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's shit characterization as you seem to imply.

This isn't true at all. There are two watch orders, and for both it's production order. OVA>movies,
TV>TV OVA

I'm a sucker for Oshii so I liked them the most. But I understand some people might be turned off by his style and especially the more slower and mature pace of the films if you went in searching for mecha SoL.

>/m/ is shit though
/m/ is MUCH better than Sup Forums.

It's more that Oshii just can't stop applying one formula to all of his movies. Also that scene where the guy was ordered not to fire back on the other guerrillas was stupid and would never fly in real life.

I lub Patlabor in all it's forms.

Well, not that one movie.

Mobile Police Patlabor: Early Days - (1988-1989) - 7 ovas - 3hrs 30mins
Patlabor: The Movie - (1989) - Film - 1hr 39mins
Mobile Police Patlabor on tv - (1989-1990) - 47 episodes - 19hrs 35mins
Mobile Police Patlabor: The New Files - (1990 - 1992) - 16 ovas - 6hrs 40mins

Mobile Police Patlabor: WXIII - (2002) - Film - 1hr 42mins
Mobile Police Patlabor Reboot - (2016) - Short - 10 mins

Total - 47 episodes / 23 ovas / 3 films / 4 short
Total Time - 1 Day, 11 hours, 34 minutes

1. Early days > Flims
2. Tv > New files
Patlabor has 2 timelines that share characters but not stories.

>Total Time - 1 Day, 11 hours, 34 minutes
for what purpose?

No.

>Total Time - 1 Day, 11 hours, 34 minutes
But how many seconds?

Sup Forums really has gone downhill though. I literally have almost 50 threads filtered on this stupid board now.

Don't be silly, user.

This is another level of spoonfeeding.

Reddit-tier, honestly.

I have a thing for making lists.

Both are great, but imo 1 has the better "Patlabor" vibe

It felt out of place. I want Noa adventures back.

>there are people who have literally wasted 2 weeks of their life watching Gundam

>There are people who didn't watch the franchise in double speed while skipping away most of the boring shit

Do you have a lot of experience of being spoonfed in Reddit?

No, but I just assume that's what they'd do.

First one is amazing. Great balance between the serious plot and the accurate characterization.
Movie 2 is an excellent film on its own, but far from being my favorite as a Patlabor fan.
Both obviously blow the shitty third movie out of the water.

Then you shouldn't start assuming things, that's mean.

Holy crap this is amazing.

You up for sharing any more of your lists?

Post your lists please.

Which one?
Not all of them have the everything the Gundam/Patlabor ones have.

The first two movies are great.

However, the second move doesn't feel like Patlabor at all.

Hidamari one

It really isnt, that board went to shit in the past couple years and is mainly just some genuine autists spamming.

Ghost in the Shell pls

>/m/ is shit though

/m/ is much better for discussions of science fiction shows, Sup Forums is mostly just waifu faggotry.

Ghost in the Shell (1995) - Film
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002-2003) - 26 episodes
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004) - Film
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (2004-2005) - 26 episodes

Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie (2015) - Film

Total - 52 episodes / 3 films / 5 OVAs / 1 TV special

That was less than I feared, thanks.

You should make a list for all the WMTs, that'd be great.

>It really isnt, that board went to shit in the past couple years
Name 3 boards that haven't, and don't mention any of the dead/glacial boards like /o/ or /t/.

Thanks user. This is a great list.

As a kid I really loved the first movie. It might not just be my all time favorite anime film but one of my favorite films period. And I say this as a guy who can't stand Oshii's shit (I loathe GiTS) and am not a /m/ guy either. But Patlabor's my jam. Really loved the tv series but stopped there. I really gotta pick this up again.

>It's more that Oshii just can't stop applying one formula to all of his movies
What's this formula though? I understand he has very distinct style but I haven't picked up anything close to formula.

This turned into a good thread. I stopped visiting Sup Forums because I thought you all only cared about kawaii little girl shit which on its own would be fine, in a healthy, reduced amount.

How long is Monogatari and Hajime no Ippo

Yeah it's pure Oshii just using another's characters for his autism.

>Total time: 2 weeks, 1 day, 3 hours, 33 minutes

I expected a lot more

pokemon please

My wife Anne is so cute.

I've watched everything Patlabor related, and think they're the pinnacle of the whole series.
Patlabor 3 wasn't that bad. Although I would recommend it first to someone who likes monster movies rather than someone looking to get into Patlabor.

Holy shit, a Patlabor thread on Sup Forums?!!?

Is it the endtimes? The apocalypse?

slayers pls, I want to get into it and there seems like a lot considering the movies and all. Also macross too

>?!!?

Well you watched until Tsuki, didn't you?

thanks user.

This thread went into some next level autism but somehow it makes me feel happy.

It would be a great board if we just had a fucking janitor

First movie is fantastic, probably the best Oshii has ever made.
Second movie is also great, but for completely different reasons.
Third movie has almost nothing to do with the rest of the franchise, but it's still pretty good.

I think I'll just watch the reboot and call it a night

I made one.
pastebin.com/WhQbJLLt

This their any other franchises I should do?
I will edit these to add the total time for the ones I missed and add other ones like the World masterpiece theater.

Patlabor II is my all time favourite Nip movie. Nothing but milgear wank, philosophy and politics.

The antagonist did nothing wrong btw.

>A MAL account based entirely around making bait images

kys yourslef

>milgear wank
>that tank scene ruined by comical physics defying turning that looks like a kid playing with a toy

Seriously the way it's animated someone could just crop out an image of that tank and re-edit it moving over the frame of the street to look realistic.

??

I felt cheated out when the second movie completely left out the Shinobu fight againts that military grade Labor and had that resolved off screen

I think you're missing 2 macross frontier movies. And macross plus was 4 episode OVA and 1 movie version.

Thanks, are the movie just recaps? I decided not to include movies like that.

Top down shot of tanks turning a corner at night during the montage of all the JSDF forces in the city, the way they turn just looks ridiculous as fuck if you're familiar with tonks, I guess I'm the only one autistic enough to have noticed it.

>what's this formula

>Favorite Patlabor girl is Shinobu
>Cucks Goto in the movie.
FUCK U OSHI!!!

Angel's Egg has a source material?

First is the best, 2nd one sucked dick, 3rd is a kaiju movie.

The live action, Next Genaration is just a "remake" of some TV/OVa chapters.

Movie 1 still has the Early Days OVA fell, just a more serious story.
Movie 2 though goes full serious mode with political-military thriller aspects like Oshii did in GitS and Jin-Roh (as a writer, not director)

It can be a bit jarring for people how enjoyed the more cop comedy aspects of Patlabor, wich he completly dropped on Movie 2, but I like it, the animation is top notch, I realy liked the focus on Nagumo and the plot is intriguing, although is just a rehash of the OVA 5 and 6 (SV's 2 Longest Day 1&2). It as nice little spin on Patlabor.

Also, with the TV show going for a alternative retelling with the original feel and atmosphere of the OVA, people who enjoyed it for the comedy have plenty of material to watch, its diferent than what happend to Nadesico, who went full serious mode with The Prince of Darkness and than just was completly abandoned

TL;DR Movies are good even of more serious, it dosen't harm the franchise

The first one is great, and while I haven't seen 2 yet it looks great too.

I like them more than the TV-series, which I could never really get into.

I don't think I would've cared about the cast in the movies at all had I not watched the TV series timeline first. Oshii definitely cares more about story/themes than he does the characters, which I'm sure some people prefer but I personally didn't.

probably because you're a "i only watch serious anime for mature people like myself" faggot
