Let me spoonfeed it for you. Shaft is known for continuously head tilts which are "tired" gimmicks. Yet Yamada has leg shots for no reasons as well because of "style."

Therefore the reasoning behind my statement is Yamada's leg shots are analogous to a shaft head tilt gimmick.

She does leg shots a lot in her other work as well. It's definitely one of her "things".

Oh, Koe no Katachi was the first movie of hers I'd seen. I think it worked well in that movie though.

Yoko Kanno and Kajiura, together with Sawano are the holy trinity of hack composers. Just listen to one song composed by them and you've heard the rest. Literally.
Rumiko Takahashi and CLAMP are both old school fujoshi who got popular for making mediocre romcoms. Both have written a shitton of manga, and yet only one of their titles was good, Maison Ikokku and CCS. That's just sad.

Yamada is the best right now. Shinkai is a close 2nd because of that Keit-Ai movie.

His best works are the ones where he just stuck to directing.

You have to give to Anno at the very least the message of the original anime and the parallels it drew with society are still very relevant to this day.
