I started reading about the concept of "The Heroes Journey" and holy shit the isekai genre is basically an exact copy of it. >Ordinary world Literally "muh average Japanese teenager" >Call to adventure Literally getting summoned >Refusal of the call Literally "muh japanese humility" >Meeting with the mentor Exposition dump harem members >Crossing the threshold Finally stop pretending to be humble and use their cheat abilities to do things >Test, Allies, Enemies inconsequential arcs that repeat for more harem members >Approach/The ordeal/The ressurection Major big bad for the arc >The reward Cheat skill gets upgraded/New cheat skill >The road back/ Return with the elixer New harem member settles in, mc goes back to pretending to be humble japanese citizen
I would cut off your hands, feet, irides and tongue if I knew where you were, Joseph Campbell. You know nothing of the world. Burn.
Christian Brooks
Which kind of isekai do you prefer?
>Japanese MC has cheat device that directly solves conflicts. RPG stats. >Chinese MC has cheat device, not outright overpowered but the device enables the MC to become more overpowered over time. Literal power levels are ubiquitous. >Korean Don't have much experience with this kind
Luis Russell
>I just started reading the basic understanding of a Heroic story.
You can't be this fucking dumb.
Kevin Russell
Except it's a shitty diluted form of it since harem members don't replace the actual roles you want for a hero's journey.
Jacob Lopez
Koreans: MC can become overpowered after learning to us it.
Christopher Collins
>A generic hero's journey is describable using the model that was explicitly developed to describe heroes' journeys. YOU DON'T FUCKING SAY
Ryan Johnson
I really think this type of setting wouldn't be as shit if authors would vary it for once. Like some very alien sci-fi world instead of generic fantasy, MC who was kinda popular in the normal world is now scared and a nobody instead of vice versa, lacks powers normal residents have instead of being OP shit, the reader explores the new world with the MC instead of knowing everything from the beginning since these series are usually typical RPG worlds. These are just random examples. There is so much stuff you could add or change to make this genre interesting. Isekai itself isn't bad, it's bad that these stories are usually shitty run-of-the-mill products made by talentless authors.
Thomas Hill
>Muh "there are only seven stories written in human history" meme Technically you are correct, because these seven stories are -purposely- described in the vaguest terms possible. There have been actual historical figures whose very lives can be described by applying the Monomyth to it, nigga.
Hudson Myers
Wow, typical shounen material follows The Hero's Journey? Amazing insight, user.
Leo Bennett
>MC who was kinda popular in the normal world is now scared and a nobody instead of vice versa Now I want a bitchy gyaru MC who's the queen bee in her high school and shits on dorks all the time, but then she gets transported to an alternate world where everyone just treats her like a dumb bimbo and she has to prove herself as a worthy adventurer (growing as a person in the process).
Bonus points for an epilogue where she returns to her own world and treats dorks nicely.
Kevin Bennett
Sure, just like nearly every story can be reduced to one of "hero goes on a journey" or "stranger comes to town" depending on how loose you are with the definitions
Noah Cox
>Hasn't heard of the monomyth What do they teach kids these days
Kevin Turner
I want that
Jason Green
isekai bump
Mason Ramirez
>isekai boom >we get 0.1% of them translated
Charles Nguyen
Korean novels are typically about people using the isekai to gain wealth and power in the real world, beat up their bullies, get their high school crush, and fuck up kim jong un
I'm not kidding about the last part
John Gray
I could swear this has been a plot for something, but I can't remember what.
Oliver Hernandez
what? do you fucking want 20% of them translated? 50%? 100%?????? you should be glad you are not witnessing the deep abyss that is the bottom of the narou pit.
Oliver Rogers
It's as if most dramatic narratives follow the standard dramatic structure. Woah
Owen James
who would have thought that generalizing things makes them similar
Connor Cruz
So when does DD get to have it's own version of kim jong un
Jeremiah Gonzalez
new isekai in the mix
Aiden Martin
another one in the mix
Nathaniel Clark
>There have been actual historical figures whose very lives can be described by applying the Monomyth to it
Care to give a few examples? I'm interested.
Elijah Bailey
I'd prefer Chinese isekai if it weren't for the fact that every MC goes out of his way to be an asshole to absolutely everyone for no reason.
>"Hello, MC, great and honorabru cultivator. This is our strongest fighter, he has a power level of 10,000" >MC announces his power level is 15 thousand threatens to kill the fighter for no reason >Fighter reveals that he was hiding his power level, and he's actually 100,000 power level >MC backs down and internal monologues about how humiliated he is, and how he will get revenge for this dishonor
Literally every Chinese isekai has at least one scene with this exact sequence of events.
Some of the longer ones have it more than ten separate times.
Landon Cooper
>in this world, the strongest man's job is [villager] is this the lvl 999 villager series? if so then DROPPED
Easton Gutierrez
Pretty sure this is not, the art is different. And the villager class is the WEAKEST, but the easiest to level
Charles Perry
...
Joshua Watson
Now this guy gets it.
Austin Hernandez
they are if you can micromanage them
Michael Taylor
Nope, not lvl999
Adam Kelly
That shit is the worse. The characters are incredibly shadow >If it's a good character then they are good and MC knows they are good >If it's an evil characterr than the MC instantly knows they are scum and will inevitably come into conflict with the him >If it's an evil character pretending to be good the MC can still tell and won't fall their tricks >Any time MC gets offended the entire sect of the opposition turns out to be pure evil so the following genocide is "justified" ( Almost never just that one disciple being an asshole and no one likes him )
And everything always escalates. It's never "ok you win man this shit isn't worth it." Always goes from shit talking to fighting with peers to fighting with the elders to to fighting with sect master to genocide. >You stepped on my shoes that one time? I'm going to kill all nine generations of your family!
Aiden Evans
or more reverse isekai.
>future mc goes back to present world and struggles with the primitive technology we use daily as computers or cellphones
>HEEEEE!? only 16 cores and 32 threads???? >how can they live with only 16GB ram >they still use those literally useless cellphones >tfw no bio-neural network to fuck my gf from jupiter
Dylan Ross
>in modern japan, i had an accident and died >then, i reincarnated into an isekai can you be more generic?
Michael Murphy
>MC backs down and internal monologues about how humiliated he is, and how he will get revenge for this dishonor Without a fight?
Colton Morgan
I want the abyss, this world needs more edgy wish fulfillment shit like dungeon seeker and re monster.
Juan Wright
Reminder that Isekai is an old and established genre, it's only new to the Japanese.
Caleb Ramirez
I got nothing to say, I just really liked this game
Noah Bell
Korean Isekai can be interesting.
Pic related, the MC becomes a loser after graduating highschool and a pizza guy who never gets anywhere in life. He is then transported to an island filled with Elves who eat fruit, have sex with whoever, and are extremely simple people with no idea about money, property, or other things.
He then takes advantage of it and proceeds to thrash to the paradise by bringing in his ideas of government (Strong rule) and other fucked up things that ruins the island. Its pretty good, you'll stay for the porn and story.
Its a tragedy, the name is: A World That I Rule
Also there is bunch of Elf killing if you're interested.
Andrew Roberts
Dorothy is the best girl and I don't care if she's literally a prostitute, I'd marry her.
Samuel Davis
SUPERIOR AMERICAN LASSO BRAIDED ONE THOUSAND TIMES!
Ryan Young
>Elf killng Im starting reading today
Jonathan Nguyen
WHERE IS THE GAY ISEKAI
Lucas Perry
Literally every story can be reduced to the monomyth. OP, this is not "bad" or "uncreative", this is human psychology and how it tries to appeal to common archetypes to create stories. I recommend you to read The Writers Journey, from Christopher Vogler. It'll open your mind.
Hudson Barnes
Become the precursor.
Joseph Jones
Why would anyone want to be gay?
Nathaniel Price
The point of the Hero's Journey and why it's called the "Monomyth" is that the majority of every heroic story conforms to it. No real need to be so surprised the most generic of the generic would match as well.
Ethan Howard
im reading it too atm, its breddy gud
Isaac Moore
History's Number One Founder
>Hell yes, I got a cheat with RPG stats and gatcha >Hell no, it comes with mandatory quests >Why are my disciples stronger than me?
Luis Howard
holy shit this is gold
Colton Lewis
Also every MC is the chosen one. Always. No exceptions. Even Japanese LNs just have the hero be super awesome but Chinese LNs are ALWAYS the prophecized chosen one
Dominic Gomez
Really? Which ones have you read? In the ones I read there's no "chosen one" so much as "right place at the right time" turned up to 11 and it keeps happening like holy fucking shit with that luck the residual good luck would bring about world peace if they really wanted it.
Easton White
>"right place at the right time" turned up to 11 That's exactly what I mean. Plus they're lucky as hell
Josiah Cook
>Father chokes you to death. >Soul gets put into the body of a golem. >Bitch doesn't even care about you in the slightest and can summon someone else.
Edge is a hard knock life.
Brody Gray
That's not really a chosen one then, they're just lucky as shit.
Thomas Ross
Japanese.
Carter Diaz
Please don't educate yourself without professional guidance and peer review.
Thanks.
Christian Reed
god, the bottom of the barrel there is some spooky shit man, don't think Sup Forums could take it
Christopher Edwards
I dunno, Biteki Kankaku ga Chigau Isekai was actually pretty good, until the author discontinued it since no one was reading or talking about it.
Asher Nguyen
I just had an idea with all this isekai reincarnation bullshit. What if reincarnation was real but instead of you being born to a new baby later on down the road or in a new RPG dimension everyone is born to a baby earlier in time? As you go back further in time it's a tournament to see who is the most pure and less and less people get reincarnated until eventually you're microbes in the primordial soup fighting it out to be the most pure..
Matthew Peterson
How spooky we talking about?
Samuel Flores
>even mentioning bootleg isekai
Jace Nguyen
cringey fanfiction.net level Think that but with cultural memes and tropes you don't understand
Mason Jackson
It's almost as if you can make any story so abstract that it fits the archetype
Jackson Ortiz
I just finished reading that And holy fucking shit >I'm retarded and can't stop fucking up: the gooknovel
Jaxson Brown
How much worse than Arifureta?
Brayden Johnson
...
Ian Garcia
Where is that post about Arifureta's first volume completing the whole hero's journey on its own?
Chase Wood
The first volume is basically an entire decent story on its own.
Everything after that is just random chuuni bullshit that the author drags the plot out with because he didn't know how he wanted the plot to progress
Gavin Howard
>villager >not goblin class
Ryan Watson
Funny that the story goes straight into garbage mode after that
Don't forget that literally all the love interests are either tsundere as fuck, completely removed from the story, or going to die. Sometimes more than one of these things.
Dominic Scott
What was the name of that shield hero isekai?
Jaxson Walker
...
Chase Watson
tate no yuusha no nariagari
Luis Reed
Also known in english as "The Rising of the Shield Hero"
Juan Torres
>No isekai where the MC is flung to a completely alien world >Nobody speaks his language, or any language on Earth for that matter >The alternate world has different rules and laws of physics, making all the MC's prior knowledge useless >MC must rely on his wits to survive, and the audience learns more about the world as he does
Camden White
>laws of physics so you want a story about LSD? There has to be some grounding in reality. Also I'm pretty sure there are stories where no one speaks the MC's language
Jordan Barnes
It does happen.
The problem is that nips interpret "rely on his wits to survive" as "is prescient in the face of any challenges, easily overcoming them; also figures out early on a 'cheat' for the new physics and rules of the world that nobody else has figured out in thousands of years"
Caleb Cruz
Best isekai are those mmo based ones like overlord and log horizon
Lincoln Walker
*King's Avatar
Chase Lewis
*sword art online
Jose Brown
I really didn't want SAO mentioned, because it's so bad.
>If you think about it, Arifureta actually completes the entire classic hero's journey in the beginning dungeon + Yue arc alone.
>1. The Ordinary World >>he is in school and mocked for being an otaku >2. The Call to Adventure >>he is summoned along with his classmates >3. Refusal of the Call >>he has the weakest skill and decides not to take a front line role >4. Meeting with the Mentor >>the soldier who is supposed to be guiding the class >5. Crossing the Threshold >>betrayed and falls into the deepest part of the dungeon >6. Tests, Allies and Enemies >>surviving on monster flesh, builds guns, rescues Yue >7. Approach to the Innermost Cave >>continues to fight through with Yue >8. The Ordeal >>Dungeon boss >9. Reward >>fucks his vampire waifu >10. The Road Back >>escape from the dangerous parts of the dungeon >11. The Resurrection >>nice vacation time in the maverick's refuge >12. Return with the Elixir >>leaves the dungeon with his vampire waifu
>Arifureta really was complete after only a single volume
Carter Wilson
And because it's not isekai, if at least Alicization is somewhat.
Jack Garcia
So, would no-life king be translated as a lich or something?
Ethan Young
