The manga has fantastic artwork, which is why I'm glad the adaptation looks to have this much budget behind it. Of course, I don't expect for it to always keep up, but a manga with good art adapted poorly is always a bitch.
The story gets a bid darker or sadder from time to time, but it's because it's necessary for Chise's growth, and she has more wonderful moments than depressing ones. Elias is cute as fuck.
The OVA is original, it tells an episode of Chise's childhood, before the manga. I understand the author is involved in it anyway.
