The US was designed as a federation in which only people who got taxed could vote. Very early on we allowed people who weren't taxed to vote anyway just because they happened to live here. Then a bunch of other stuff happened.
Basically the Founders were Republicans, they thought "only payers get to play" was reasonable and it turns out the mob thought differently. This resulted in undesirables gaining power over the system, putting their foreign leaders in power and then attempting to outright remove the existing population in favor of other foreigners malleable to their cause of trying to control the vast resources and industrial potential of America.
The Founders never even considered something like the Industrial Revolution possible, how could they have forseen the intense subversion the system has been subject to and the incompetence of so-called guardians of the system in defending it?
