Honestly, he used to write some interesting stories. 'It' actually had some truly great horror writing along with his Roland and the Dark Tower series. It is hard to argue that he was not able to come up with some unique story ideas. BUT, almost without exception, and invariably, all of his endings are pure excrement. The only time he was able to produce a decent (and sometimes respectable) ending was in his short story writing. I actually recommend 'The Long Walk' as a novella.

However, he has always been overrated. Not many know but he has authored several 'serious' papers on literary and world topics. I have to use the quotes because his evaluations quickly spiral into hyperbole and pure opinion and any fame he ever garnered in this area has to be completely attributed to his fame as a horror author. He doesn't do much in this area any more.

He got hit by a drunk neighbor in the late nineties (not sure of the exact date, not important) and got fucked up pretty badly. Pretty much everything he has written since has been drivel.
