Something that Kyoto Animation ought to be praised for is their consistent style, proportions, design. You can take only two or three panels ought of the entire series as "quality". And even then, they're funny and prove good meme material. I'm thinking of kumiko's weird leg-turn.
The show wants the world to feel consistent and "real" to an extent, and the staff puts forth the full effort to make every frame match a certain level of quality that we have come to expect from Kyo-Ani. This, if not anything else, is worthy of praise, for an animation studio, relative to most others, besides maybe madhouse or other studios which put forth real effort.
They have an actual catalogue of background characters, EACH WITH THEIR OWN FUCKING VOICE ACTORS, and they make them fit into the setting in natural and unobtrusive ways, they add to the world of the story. This show seemed like an experiment with diversity of character the way FREE seemed like an experiment with WATER physics and animation.
Kyo-Ani is going to continue to be king. They care, and sometimes they make things like KnK or Tamako, but its always at least still good to look at. And when they encounter a worthwhile narrative, then they hit a fucking home run like you'd never believe.
I direct your attention to Koe no Katachi. Which was brilliant.
