When its hot outside in anime's there are always these things that are making a high pitch noise akin to crickets at nigjt. What are these things? What is the source of these sounds?

I live in northeast USA and during the day you can hear them if you go near forests. Also the cicadas in America tend to congregate around the bases of those large power line poles(not the smaller street ones) for some reason.

Question, to those who hate bugs do you also hate spiders? If so, why? Spiders should be your best friend since they eat bugs. Personally they bother me but I never kill them, just grab them witb a napkin and put them outside.
