Genetics and behaviour? Well seems many baseline parameters of a personality depend on variants of certain genes. Many are not identified yet but some candidates are known. A certain variant of MAOA (aka the 'warrior gene', a stupid name if you ask me) lead to a high incidence of violent or criminal behaviour ... think it mostly affects impulse control. May have been selected for under certain circumstances as it seems to keep you on edge constantly. Variants in the dopaminergic system (genes like DRD4 or COMT) do also strongly affect behaviour (mostly through the reward system of the brain) and one may even make prediction of a person's political views based on variants in these genes. One very solidly researched area are the so-called CLOCK genes ... they control your day-night cycle and depending on the variants of these genes you are either a lark (most active in the morning) or an owl (most active in the evening and can't get out of bed).

It was a typical American study abroad for a summer in Hannover (is it with one or two"n"s??). It was a weird trade off. The more Americans my university sent, the more Germans could study in the US at my school. Weird system. Anyway, I was an assistant doing some research on the prevalence of Diabetes among Germans and comparing the German and American healthcare systems for some big project in the States. Super dry stuff. I would then go to the beer gardens, get German drunk and chat with the locals about politics. Was totally unaware there are actual card carrying members of the "communist" party. Made me chuckle.
