It depends on who the 50 million were. If you got rid of 50M worth of illegals and the bottom rungs of society our economy would contract for a decade, then see an explosion of growth once everything adjusted. We'd be better off in the long run.

seems exaggerated to me

Historian Walter Scheidel notes that the violence of the land reform campaign had a significant impact on economic inequality. He gives as an example the village of Zhangzhuangcun, made famous by Hinton's book Fanshen:
“ In Zhangzhuangcun, in the more thoroughly reformed north of the country, most "landlords" and "rich peasants" had lost all their land and often their lives or had fled. All formerly landless workers had received land, which eliminated this category altogether. As a result, "middling peasants," who now accounted for 90 percent of the village population, owned 90.8 percent of the land, as close to perfect equality as one could possibly hope for.

Does he count? So much for a nationalist. He was a loser.
He lost the civil war after the united front that he formed with the communists in order to drive out the other yellow people.
he and his fellow nationalists eventually fucked off to the isle of formosa, and that is how taiwan, aka the republic of china was born.
The us sent him arms, to fight the japanese, But uses them on the communists much more.
He should have BTFO'd the other little yellow man and then focused on the communists.
The us sent him funds, but they ended up in the pockets of his corrupt generals.

So if you think the Chinese of today are savages, Mao pruned the savagest of the savages during this period.
he also destroyed any semblance of ethnic tensions.
Because of Mao, China is no more or less than just China.
was it evil and calculating, yes.. did it produce a better nation yes.

Nice fairytales, bro.
He made some honest mistakes, but he barely killed anyone, and founded a great power and prosperity for China out of a half a century of chaos and corruption.

I just love when people throw random numbers like it's nothing. >yeah 7 billion, wait, let's round that number 10 gorrilion people died , don't you know that ? >these sources say an unknown number of people fall victim during the ____ period, yeah my guess would be, hmmm, 5 million - yeah that sounds plausable >hmm, it all adds up to ~ 72 zillion, wait, we have to round it up, 100 zillion that sounds nice and all
Also a reminder that this is how "Gulag archipelago" got to it's numbers. An interesting thing I found in the numbers that the book presents is that in Yugoslavia 1 million people died as a result of work camps. Now having a bit of personal knowledge and a bit of digging, it turned out only 1 work camp (political prison) was ever active in Yugoslavia and during it's 25 years of activity it hosted some 5000 inmates, out of whom ~500 were on a death sentance That means that the book amplified the victims by a factor of 2000

>But, the transformation — either into joint-stock companies and trusts, or into State-ownership — does not do away with the capitalistic nature of the productive forces. In the joint-stock companies and trusts, this is obvious. And the modern State, again, is only the organization that bourgeois society takes on in order to support the external conditions of the capitalist mode of production against the encroachments as well of the workers as of individual capitalists. The modern state, no matter what its form, is essentially a capitalist machine — the state of the capitalists, the ideal personification of the total national capital. The more it proceeds to the taking over of productive forces, the more does it actually become the national capitalist, the more citizens does it exploit. The workers remain wage-workers — proletarians. The capitalist relation is not done away with.
