I believe it happened. But most of the deaths were due to disease and starvation. All of the corpses in pictures are malnourished and disease riddled. This would happen with any prisoners being held in any war once the supply lines were cut. You have to feed your soldiers before prisoners if you are low on supplies. That’s just how it is.
