People use the specific terminology "non hispanic whites" because that's how the census disambiguate. They have, in the 2010, America distribution being 71% white, of those 61.6% non hispanic white.
They also include North Africans, Jews, Arabs and Persians in the white category meaning America is actually around 59% non hispanic european white.
See why the terminology matters? You don't really think of most "white hispanics", jews, argelinas and iranians as white but for the census they're all part of that 71%
