What is it with the Japanese and high school?

What is it with the Japanese and high school?

They take school seriously there so it's more of a part of their lives, doubly so when the target audience is still in or near school age.

The only meaningful days of their bleak existence before their souls are sucked out by their corporate overlords and their wallets emptied by overpriced cartoons reminding them of how much better things used to be before they entered this 9-5 hell in which they will spend the rest of their days alone before one little fuck up gets them fired and they kill themselves

It's all downhill after highschool for the average jap

After high school most japs become wage slaves for the rest of their lives, and it's japan,so they live for 200 years. Why have kids when you can use that time to get a promotion or two?, Then become the CEO, even if your a 70 year old virgin.
So it's the only good thing they ever remember

Basically the same in the US and Disney Channel, all the live action shows are basically high school hijinx

They try and redo their dull meaningless adolescences by living vicariously through 2d childrens cartoon characters

Are you retarded? Most US shows are about adults.

Why don't nips see university as the same thing? In my country uni is seen as a better part of your life than high school.

Salaryman life is shit there i heard.

It's really the same in all countries once you think about it.

Because after it you become a wageslave who either lives to an old age, gets hit by truck-kun, or dies to the japanese cold

Japs don't go to uni, it's either miserable NEET life or miserable wageslavery after high school.

Japan is obsessed with purity, so they do 'first love' stories set before university. I wish there were more post-high school romance series, too, but Tsuki ga Kirei from last season was set in middle school and it was fucking excellent.

Is getting into one so difficult and competitive that only a very small % will ever get into one?

Nips are just too stupid for it.

>Most US shows are about adults
Yes, but you missed the point. Notice user mentioned Disney Channel. Of the shows that are about children, most of those involve school.

Isn't some of their university only accept the best bunch of the crops ?
I.e If there's 40 applicant, they will only accept the 10 with the highest score. So even if they scored above national average, they still won't be accepted.

Disney Channel is a kids channel user.

Uni is so boring. High school provides the best interaction with a consistent group of people.

University is fucking serious in Japan. It's literally Occupation: Student. You treat classmates like actual colleagues. There's rarely any room for fucking around or the gratuitous campus life like in Western colleges.

Wrong, only the highest tier universities are strict, as you would expect everywhere. High school is stricter than most universities, and after graduating there is no more pressure to get into a university. Uni is the last chance to relax before being a salaryman.

Why does everybody act like the only career path in Japan is a salaryman?

It's not the Japanese, it's otaku. If you looked at live-action dramas and films coming out of Japan, you'd see plenty of stories that don't take place in high schools. Anime does not reflect Japanese culture to the extent you believe it does.

Cheap and easy setting

after graduating from school and becoming salarymen their lives just become a meanignless haze of 13 hour workdays and never seeing their wives or children

Weird how they went from series about escaping highschool hell and exploring and living life to idealized school life and the heart breaking acceptance of wage slavery.

This is why Gohan is outright loathed by the DB fanbase now.

The last time they had freedom
Also anime is for children

Why do Americans favor High School Dramas? 13 Reasons Why (HS), Stranger Things (MS/HS), Dawson's Creek (HS), Saved by the Bell (HS), Fresh Prince (HS), Etc-- these are all High School series.

The reason is that the HS audience has more free time to watch TV series, adults like to look back at HS, etc. Ultimately, College is way fucking cooler, but there is a lot of sex and rowdiness, even in Japan. This also creates a class divide since those who did not go to college to not get to relate. And there are less fake love stories and more real love stories.

People hate real love stories because they want love to be uncomplicated. High School "love" offers that, since it's all retarded.
